About the Job

The Department of Pediatrics has an exciting opportunity for an Academic Healthcare Data Scientist to contribute to the improvement of children's health through applying their exceptional organizational talents in support of pediatric research, education, and clinical care. This role functions at the heart of the department, working with faculty and staff as well as colleagues from across the Medical School and partner organizations. This position will be a part of an interdisciplinary team, leveraging data-driven insights to optimize healthcare delivery and improve academic operations.

We are seeking a highly motivated Data Scientist to join our academic healthcare team. This individual will apply advanced data analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling techniques to analyze complex healthcare datasets. The ideal candidate will collaborate with clinicians, researchers, and administrators to develop data-driven solutions that enhance patient care, operational efficiency, and medical research.

While this in-person position is located at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital on the West Bank, it also requires travel throughout the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus. Note that required qualifications must be reflected in application materials.

100% - Academic Healthcare Data Scientist

  • Design and implement data-driven models to support clinical decision-making, and academic operational improvements.
  • Analyze large-scale datasets, including clinical and academic financial and operational datasets, and other biomedical information.
  • Develop predictive models, machine learning algorithms, and statistical analyses to identify trends and improve business performance.
  • Collaborate with physicians, administrators, and other stakeholders to translate data insights into actionable strategies.
  • Ensure data integrity, security, and compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory standards.
  • Develop dashboards and visualization tools to communicate findings effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Stay current with emerging trends in data science, artificial intelligence, and healthcare analytics.
  • Assist with training and implementation of various tools, such as Power BI dashboards to Division and service line leadership.
Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least eight years, applies knowledge and skill to a recurring task or activity with emphasis typically on precision and timeliness of execution.
  • Ability to interrogate data, perform analyses, interpret data, and present to healthcare and academic audiences.
  • Knowledge of open source data science and statistics packages such as Python, R, SQL, etc.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Tableau, Smartsheet, or Power BI.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining key relationships with internal (peers, business partners and leadership) and external (business community, clients and vendors) within a matrix organization to ensure quality standards for service.
  • Experience analyzing and reporting data in order to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions.
  • Must be fluent in English. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates advanced editing and proofreading skills.
  • Able to navigate both PCs and Mac products as well as understand, navigate, and troubleshoot various software and hardware.
  • High attention to detail with demonstrated organization skills and focus on quality, accuracy and completeness of work.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with people from a variety of communities, backgrounds, and identities.
  • This role is highly active and involves frequent movement across campus to access various spaces. The ideal candidate must have the ability to walk, stand, and move between locations for extended periods. This includes the capacity to carry light equipment or materials when necessary.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in a quantitative, computational or technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated related experience working in a clinical or academic medicine setting.
  • Experience working with healthcare data and other operational datasets.
  • Experience with machine learning, statistical modeling, and data visualization.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $43.00 - $63.00/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 50%
