About the Job

Reporting to the CFO, the Accounting Manager supports the Association by ensuring stakeholders have accurate financial information, with a control framework in place to minimize the risk of misappropriation, misstatements or errors, and by working with the University's human resource staff to provide human resource support services. The Accounting function includes support from a Finance Specialist and a part-time accounting student worker.

Essential Functions*

Financial accounting, reporting and compliance (80%)

* Responsible for the preparation and distribution of monthly financial statements and information to internal and external stakeholders.
* Maintain schedules and reports that support balance sheet and profit and loss report totals.
* Stay abreast of current GAAP guidelines and modify accounting and reporting processes to adhere to these guidelines.
* Work with UMAA leadership and staff to ensure the financial information distributed is understood and meets their needs.
* Monitor financial activity relative to budget, work with staff to alert them to variances, work with staff to create quarterly forecasts.
* Enter transactions and budget entries in the University's Electronic Fund System (EFS).
* Review and approve A/R, A/P and payroll journal entries. Prepare complex journal entries.
* Manage financial information exchanges between software platforms.
* Prepare monthly bank and other account reconciliations. Reconcile subsidiary ledgers (AP/AR/EFS) to the trial balance.
* Work with CFO and staff to ensure there are appropriate internal controls.
* Monitor cash balance and requirements; recommend cash transfers as needed.
* Initiate transfers from various investment funds to and from operating and University funds.
* Complete preparations for annual audit and work with auditors during the audit.
* Coordinate and perform fiscal year-end accounting procedures and closing processes.
* Coordinate preparation of IRS Form 990 and other annual tax and statutory filings with accounting firm. Provide financial information as needed.
* Complete annual IRS forms 1099 and 1096.
* Process Federal and State quarterly estimated UBI tax payments and annual MN Sales Tax report.
* Serves as a liaison with external vendors and departments with invoices and billings.

Payroll and human resources (10%)

* Process employee hiring, terminations, salary adjustments and annual continuations documentation.
* Review summary payroll journal entries. (Payroll and benefits, and detailed accounting, are administered by University.)
* Connect staff with appropriate University human resource support to address HR-related questions, FMLA leave, and other needs.

Other Functions:

Other duties as assigned (10%)
* Manage postage account balances and transfers.
* Work with the manager of the Minnesota Alumni Market to reconcile financial information and oversee sales tax reports.
* Provide support to CFO for Board of Directors and Finance/Audit Committee materials and meetings.
* Provide support at major UMAA events.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or related field with four years of professional finance or accounting experience, or eight years of equivalent education and experience .
* Proficiency with MS Excel, MS Word, Google Apps, and accounting systems.
* Detail oriented and the ability to enter data accurately and efficiently.
* Ability to work independently; strong organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Proficient with Microsoft Dynamics GP or Microsoft Business Central.
* Proficient with University of Minnesota PeopleSoft (EFS & HRMS).

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $70,000 - $85,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
