Salary: The budgeted salary range for the position is $165,000 to $220,000. Position Summary
The Department of Medicine seeks an Internist (or subspecialist) who is fellowship trained in Clinical informatics or previous experience in information technology operations management including leading and participating in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives. The selected candidate will serve as a non-tenure faculty in the Department of Medicine and as the Associate Chief Medical Information Officer at UI Health.

This position provides leadership and vision for the implementation, maintenance and optimization of the 3i Project's implementation of the Epic platform and the application of Clinical Informatics knowledge and electronic data extraction supporting improving workflows and utilization across the enterprise with a particular focus on inpatient services. This position serves as the primary physician and advanced practice provider bridge between technology and clinical care delivery in the inpatient space, focusing on the needs of the provider and patient community. This role works closely with inpatient CMO leadership, Quality leadership, Information Services leadership, Nursing leadership, Lab leadership and Pharmacy leadership.

There is a close relationship with the Institute for Healthcare Delivery Design to help create innovative, people-centered education and processes to better serve the patients of UI Health. This position will be focused on the work life influencers that exist within the interactions with the Epic tool, working to ensure improvements in the work life of all providers/clinicians interacting with Epic with a focus on inpatient services. It also supports data driven process change at UI Health leading to more efficient, effective care delivery by serving as the primary bridge between providers, health information technology and the patients they serve.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides clinical service is their appropriate specialty.
  • Teaches learners at all levels including medical students, residents, and fellows.
  • Guides inpatient workflow design and system configuration, providing guidance on translating workflows into system build.
  • Responsible for insuring that IT implementations and adoption support all compliance and audit regulations.
  • Through leadership, influence, a commitment to transparency, and knowledge of both healthcare and Clinical Informatics, the incumbent educates inpatient providers and clinicians regarding the critical contributions that health IT systems make to patient care and to their individual practices.
  • Promotes data driven improvements by using analytic tools that lead to decreased variation from "Best Practice" methods and improved clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Serves as a change agent in inpatient services to guide medical staff and the medical school through upgrades in technology.
  • Works collaboratively with the Hospital Information Systems department, working seamlessly as a part of the Information Systems leadership structure.
  • Supports the academic direction and learning processes for Clinical Informatics, providing input to Informatics leadership
  • Provides leadership in the planning, development and implementation of strategic and tactical plans. Evaluates the impact of solutions on Inpatient clinical processes and identify areas to create efficiencies for clinicians and improving quality of care.
  • Engineers workflows and processes that maximize efficiency and lead to the highest quality of clinical care
  • Helps turn data into knowledge and wisdom throughout UI Health through data visualization and analytics interfacing closely with the business intelligence team.
  • Promotes innovations in new care-delivery models to improve inpatient operating efficiency and patient satisfaction expressed through key metrics, such as Length of Stay (LOS), readmit rates and HCAHPS.
  • Embraces a collaborative approach to decision-making and communications among all of UI Health. This includes executive and medical staff leaders, Hospital leadership (including direct reports and all other management/leadership), Hospital staff and medical faculty. Recognizes the symbiotic and intertwined relationship between the Hospital and College of Medicine.
  • In collaboration with Executive leaders provides input on performance strategies, goals and mutual incentive language to improve enterprise performance.
  • In collaboration with other executive leaders, creates superior transitions of care strategies in both pre-acute and post- acute domains as they interface with the inpatient domain.
  • Builds commitment and facilitates effective collaboration among all clinical team members and between clinical departments throughout the system.
  • Provides leadership and direction in planning and rolling out future health information technology initiatives and implementations with a focus on X clinical workflows and regulatory requirements.
  • Helps further bridge together Informatics silos across UI Health including Clinical, Nursing, Lab and Pharmacy Informatics.
  • Give guidance to the physician builder program which gives providers direct access to help design the EHR, improves efficiency and allows for a deeper partnership between Information Services (IS) and the provider community. Helps assure that physician builders can then become ambassadors for the EHR within their specialty groups. Also ensures this program adheres to all organizational change control policies and procedures.
  • Continues to adapt to the changing technology and regulatory Health IT landscape with provider satisfaction as a central goal
  • Integrates informatics disciplines into the medical profession. The practice of medicine is increasingly integrated with technology and this role helps providers own and understand that technology to most effectively care for their patients.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Health care professional degree (Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy) required. Unrestricted Illinois license to practice medicine or Illinois license eligible
    • Completion of an Internal Medicine residency
    • Fellowship training in Clinical informatics or previous experience in information technology operations management including leading and participating in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives.
    • Strong leadership, interpersonal, written and communication skills. Ability to analyze complex problems and develop recommendations and solutions. Conflict resolution skills and diplomacy for consensus building. Tolerance for ambiguity and comfort working in a matrixed organizational model.
    • Complex, multi-disciplinary project management experience required, with proven track record of operational change. Previous project management and/or process improvement successes
