The Opportunity

Genentech, a world leader in biotechnology, is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Technical Development Senior Scientist for driving automation in our Research Materials Group (RMG) group within the Cell Culture and Bioprocess Operations (CCBO) department. The Senior Scientist will play a pivotal role in leading and advancing our RMG initiatives to support pre-Early Stage Research to Early Development projects with high-throughput protein production from mammalian transient cultures. This position requires expertise with cell culture and sterile technique, as well as automation experience to join our team to enable protein production at Genentech and help advance our portfolio.

What You'll Do

  • Execute RMG Projects: Perform transient transfections in CHO and HEK293 cells in scales 1mL to 25L to support pipeline productions adhering to established protocols. Maintain seed train cell cultures in bioreactors and shake flasks. Maintain and troubleshoot key cell culture instruments such as Vi-Cell, Nova Flex2, Cedex BioHT and bioreactors

  • RMG Automation: Drive the improvement and optimization of automated RMG platforms and processes to enhance productivity and consistency. Develop and operate liquid handler workflows for automated processes

  • Technical Leadership: Lead development and technology projects to improve existing cell culture platforms and develop new platforms to deliver diverse protein and cellular reagents to enable a large number of research programs. Provide both technical oversight and strategic guidance to other team members.

  • Innovation and Strategy: Identify and develop innovative RMG strategies and technologies to maintain Genentech's leadership position in biopharmaceutical development.

  • Data Analysis and Presentation: Analyze complex datasets to inform decision-making and refine RMG processes. Author and review protocols, technical reports, and scientific articles.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments including Antibody Engineering, Cell Culture Process Development, Purification Chemistry, and others to ensure seamless integration of RMG activities with overall pipeline priorities.

Who You Are

  • Education: BS (8+ years), MS (5+ years) or PhD (2+ years) in Chemical Engineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related life sciences field.

  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in automated cell culture within the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Automation Expertise: Proficiency in automated cell culture systems, liquid handling programming, bioinformatics, and related software tools. Proven track record of leading efforts to implement new automation technologies.

  • Technical Skills: Expertise in mammalian cell culture (CHO and/or HEK293) and high-throughput screening techniques.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and strong collaborative skills.

  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in implementing automated cell culture processes.

  • Hands-on experience with automation and liquid handlers.

  • State-of-the-art transient protein expression experience.

  • Relevant bioreactor experience.

  • Industry experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies.

  • Publications or patents in the field of cell culture automation, transient transfections and related technologies.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $104,700 - $194,400. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
