About the Role

We are seeking a new Editor or Senior Editor for our academic books program in Sociology and Anthropology. You will acquire and publish content across all our formats (monographs, Palgrave Pivots, textbooks, reference works, and a small number of general interest titles), in a role which includes maintaining the existing portfolio and developing new areas for growth. You will be responsible for identifying authors, negotiating contract terms, and managing the development and submission of book projects, overseeing the lifecycle of each book from proposal to publication. You will work with the head of the Sociology team to develop your list as part of the wider team, imprint and company strategy. This role is located in our New York City office on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Identify authors and support them in developing and producing their projects, remaining a point of contact throughout the publication process

  • Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals submitted by authors, assessing their suitability for the list and the market

  • Meet goals set by editorial management such as contracts signed, manuscripts handed over to production and books published

  • Maintain profitable relationships with book series editors, authors and advisors

  • Manage the backlist, make decisions on publishing potential and new editions of successful titles

  • Conduct market and competitive research in your subject area, familiarizing yourself with market trends on a national and international level

  • Travel to academic conferences (domestic and international) as required

  • Work closely with the editorial support teams to ensure book projects are published to schedule

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, numerate and IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail

  • Diplomatic and assertive, able to work with demanding stakeholders and develop strong networks of contacts

  • Proficient at organizing and prioritizing a large number of tasks, able to work on own initiative

  • Resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries

  • Excellent team-working skills to deal with people internally and externally at all levels, as well as the ability to work independently within a team environment

Desirable

  • Prior knowledge and experience of working within subject area (or a related field)

  • Previous experience in books commissioning and/or academic publishing

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Editor: $66,000 - $80,000 / Senior Editor: $91,000 - $100,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
