The Strategic Client Executive in National Accounts is responsible for the overall management of a book of Strategic Accounts in the 5,000+ customer segment. They are accountable for the maintenance, growth and increased profitability of existing business, the acquisition of new business, and the strategic direction of assigned accounts. Direct strategic, customer specific initiatives, which deliver "value added" services through the execution of client specific business plans. Coordinate and influence superior customer service delivery by developing and maintaining strong intercompany relationships.

This position will be hybrid in the office 3 days per week in one of the following cities: Hartford, CT, Washington DC or Boston, MA.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Establishes and maintains strong professional and personal relationships with customers and consultants presenting a positive image of National Accounts
  • Develops relationships with influencers and decision makers within the client organization
  • Accountable for the growth and retention of the book of business
  • Secures new business within book of business (upsell)
  • Directs strategic, customer specific initiatives, which deliver "value added" services through the execution of client specific business plans
  • Develops and executes on Account Level Business Plan (ALBP) and annual calendar of activities for each client; updates ALBPs at a minimum quarterly
  • Schedules customer initiatives based on annual planning calendar
  • Coordinates and influences superior customer service through internal network throughout UHG
  • Leads cross functional AMT to deliver superior service to customers, including leading and/or facilitating regular internal AMT calls with action plans and external calls with customers
  • Monitors clients medical plan financial performance and leads renewal planning and negotiations to support National Accounts profitability objectives
  • Demonstrates market and technical expertise through client, broker and consultant meetings
  • Leads and facilitates proposals for RFPs on existing business; may engage a Sales VP on large, complex opportunities
  • Develops and delivers TAS reports / reviews
  • Executes upon TAS recommendations in a timely manner
  • Manages escalated client issues to resolution
  • Participates and supports external client claims audits by attending on-site audit close-out meeting, internal response and remediation preparation meetings and client auditor review meetings; assists with ongoing remediation
  • Partners with external vendors in support of client initiatives and programs
  • Updates and maintains data integrity of client databases and sales tools on a timely basis (e.g., Merit)
  • Drives client participation to 100% completion of annual customer satisfaction survey
  • Understands customers business issues including earnings, market conditions, competitors, etc.; listens to quarterly earnings calls and updates ALBPs accordingly
  • Actively participates in personal development (MAP self-assessment, training, etc.)
  • Attends and participates in one-on-ones with RVP /VPCR
  • Manages client receivables, i.e. outstanding ASO fees or any other financials
  • Leads delivery of customer reports with support from business partners
  • Communicates to clients of network changes in situations where issues are escalated or there is risk to membership
  • Develops plans to move NPS detractors to passives and passives to promoters
  • Meets and engages with key local consultants for customer issues and general relationship building
  • Creates and manages sales and business opportunities
  • Leads and ensures appropriate preparation and performance at finalist meetings and site visits for existing business
  • Partners with Sales VP on finalist meetings and site visit requirements for new business
  • Assists with implementation for new business clients
  • Provides feedback to management on market trends and improvement opportunities presented by clients and consultants
  • Maintains a high level of healthcare industry, customer's industry and consultant knowledge (e.g., attends conferences within own region, pursues external designation such as CEBS, etc.)
  • Drives and supports the Executive Sponsor program to ensure UHG Senior Management maintains ongoing relationship and contact with client organization

Required Qualifications:



  • Active insurance license, or acquire any required licenses within first 30 days of being in the job; must maintain current license requirements thereafter
  • 5+ years in healthcare sector
  • 3+ years of experience in managing large National Accounts (5,000 lives+) in the health insurance industry
  • Solid understanding of business financial acumen
  • Demonstrates strategic thinking and planning
  • Proven solid relationship management skills, comfortable engaging with high level executives at client organization
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven good leadership skills
  • Maintain valid driver's license
  • Reside within commuting distance to Hartford, CT, Washington DC or Boston, MA
  • Willing and able to travel 50% +/- depending on business need



The salary range for this role is $75,000 to $160,000 annually based on full-time employment. Role is also eligible to receive bonuses based on sales performance. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
