About the Job

Duties:

Provide technical expertise and support for the research projects and Mineral Processing & Metallurgy group. Possesses in-depth subject matter knowledge of pyrometallurgy, especially in the field of iron ore pelletizing and ironmaking (e.g., reduction, smelting, sintering, and induration). The specific tasks are as follows: analysis and reporting of pyrometallurgical data; design of experiment review; technical publication support; troubleshooting of research tools/equipment; and general technical metallurgical support to the team.

Essential Functions:

1. Subject Matter Expertise (70%)

  • Apply expertise in iron ore pelletizing, iron reduction, and ironmaking to interpret physical, chemical, and metallurgical research data.
  • Apply expertise in phase transformations, thermodynamics, and reaction kinetics of metallurgical systems for data analysis and reporting.
  • Familiarity with advanced characterization techniques, such as EPMA, SEM-EDS, XRD, heating microscopy, and/or TGA.
  • Ensure quality of research data and analyze data and preparation of reports and papers on results of the work including peer reviewed journals.

2. Develop and Design Complex Research Tasks (20%)

  • Designs and evaluates complex research tasks within larger projects and programs, specifically related to pyrometallurgy.
  • Works with PIs and researchers to develop research investigations from experimental design to interpretation of experimental results.
  • Evaluate, suggest alternate methods, modify or develop new procedures and techniques to aid in the investigation of a research problem or project.
  • Contribute as a team member on multidisciplinary projects.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of research programs

3. Operational Functions (10%)

  • Reviews practices and procedures and offers recommendations to improve quality.
  • Advise on the operation and maintenance of high-temperature experimental equipment such as furnaces, kilns, and reactors.
  • Understanding of the safety protocols required for high-temperature operations in the laboratory.
  • Explores ways to better achieve end results through scheduling work steps, arranging/re-arranging the way work is performed.
  • Streamline current test methods and procedures.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in metallurgy, materials, chemical engineering, process engineering, or related field with substantial research and publication record.
  • More than 8 years of related work experience to effectively perform the positions responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in metallurgy, materials, chemical engineering, process engineering, or related field
  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge in the fundamentals and application of iron ore pelletizing, iron reduction, and/or ironmaking
  • Knowledge of mineral characterization techniques, mineral processing, and metallurgical analytical techniques (physical, chemical, and metallurgical)

Situated near Minnesota's minerals and forestry resource-based industries, NRRI's Coleraine Lab is a world-renowned center for minerals and biomass conversion and their connections to land, forest, and water resources. NRRI Coleraine possesses the facilities, equipment, and highly qualified staff to conduct applied research for private and public sector clients in Minnesota, North America and around the world. The lab has a wide range of equipment for conducting studies at both laboratories (grams/pounds) and pilot scales (tons). Laboratory and pilot scale capabilities include mineral characterization, mineral processing, metallurgy, and biomass conversion to energy and agronomic products.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $53.75-$70.00/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
