Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Job Description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Missouri S&T seeks qualified individuals for the position of our internal Director of Technical Services and Facilities Management. This role supervises MAE's electronics technicians and machine shop personnel in the installation and maintenance of the department's physical assets.

Management/Administrative Duties:

  • Facility, Safety & Space Management
    • Oversee research and instructional lab facilities, ensuring equipment maintenance, safety compliance (including required signage and key card access), and proper coordination with campus police and health/safety teams
    • Maintain and update space use inventories in collaboration with the department chair
  • Technical Shop Supervision & Staffing
    • Manage the technical shop (electronics and machine shops), including workflow prioritization, time sheet management, staff evaluations, and hiring/replacement processes
    • Plan for long-term equipment needs and shop operations
  • Inventory, Files & Purchasing Oversight
    • Oversee department capital equipment inventory (with annual verifications), file access lists, work order systems, and equipment checkout processes
    • Assist with planning, budgeting, and purchasing support for lab and shop equipment, including capital purchases and installation coordination with Physical Facilities

Technical Duties

  • Equipment Design & Development
    • Collaborate with faculty and graduate students on the design and development of instructional and research experimental equipment, involving significant mechanical and electrical design work
  • Installation & Setup of Equipment
    • Manage the installation and implementation of research and instructional equipment to support program needs
  • Software & Event Support
    • Provide LabVIEW support (installation and programming) for labs
    • Offer technical assistance for special meetings and events (e.g., managing checkout computers, sound equipment, and audio-visual systems)
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Licensure may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in and demonstrated technical skills with pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, electronic and instrumentation systems
  • Background in and demonstrated technical skills with project and personnel management
  • Background in and demonstrated skills in managing program budgets
  • Clear communication skills with work order process
  • BS in engineering or technical field, or equivalent combined education and experience (e.g., 10 years or more working experience in electronic and mechanical system design and fabrication).
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $58,960 to $75,879.12 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
