The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a technical professional to provide engineering and operational support to the US Navy's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) in areas related to the Trident Strategic Weapon System.

You will be resident in Washington, DC, at the Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Headquarters. The individual will provide technical support to SSP related to the Trident Strategic Weapon System (SWS) and will be a technical liaison between APL and SSP. The primary support will be related to Trident patrol evaluation, Trident Flight Test operations, the annual performance assessment of the Trident SWS, and Demonstration and Shakedown Operations (DASO) of the Trident SWS.

As a Technical Liaison you will....

  • Provide technical liaison between SSP technical branches, APL SLBM Weapon Systems Evaluation Program Office, and other APL staff supporting APL's Trident SWS test and evaluation activities.
  • Assist with the planning, conduct and reporting of SSBN patrol evaluation, Commander Evaluation Tests (CETs), Follow-on Commander Evaluation Tests (FCETs), and Demonstration and Shakedown Operations (DASOs)
  • Support development of the Trident II Planning Factors to USSTRATCOM
  • Attend US and UK DASO planning meetings, facilitate APL test operation readiness preparations, and attend US/UK technical exchange meetings.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical disciplines.
  • Have eight years of relevant professional experience with and thorough understanding of the Trident II Strategic Weapon System (SWS), knowledge of SSBN operations and SWS performance.
  • Have demonstrated skills in leadership, organization, and planning and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are comfortable interacting effectively with individuals of different experience levels and backgrounds including external industry and military personnel.
  • Are able to travel to local meetings, up to weeklong meetings in CONUS, and infrequent travel to international meetings in the UK. Also requires extended periods of travel to support CET, FCET, and DASO field tests and operations, including underway on submarines. Total travel time could be up to approximately 40% annually in support of duties.
  • Have an active Secret Clearance and are able to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Special Working Conditions: Resident at SSP Headquarters in Washington, DC, with travel to APL in Howard County, Maryland, and to US and UK military and contractor facilities, as required. Must be medically cleared and capable for work and travel on US/UK Naval submarines in order to support at-sea test and evaluation.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have ten years plus of experience with Trident SWS operations and/or test and evaluation.
  • Master's degree in engineering or related technical fields.
  • Have an active Top Secret clearance.
  • Have familiarity with Columbia class SSBN program

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
