Description

Responsibilities:

Apply engineering principles to solve mechanical problems. Mechanical problems are those that are related to motion and dynamics of heat, fluids, and solid materials required to design equipment and systems whose parts and assemblies' function in a safe and reliable, efficient, and predictable manner.

  • Decompose project goals into defined and controlled design requirements.
  • Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the mechanical engineering discipline to develop a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements.
  • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical systems to support and verify design.
  • Maintain familiarity with and technical understanding of codes and standards applicable to mechanical engineering.
  • Document the design (models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions, etc.) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards.
  • Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure that technical features important to design are maintained.
  • Oversee or otherwise ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are in conformance with the design.
  • Maintain assigned systems/equipment using preventative methods and identifying maintenance requirements in the Preventative Maintenance Change Requirements form.
  • Perform calculations and analysis as needed to ensure the design meets technical requirements.
  • Provide solutions to technical problems and recommendations for improvements.
  • Apply engineering principles to monitor and evaluate condition and operational performance of equipment and systems related to mechanical engineering; recommend repairs and replacements and spare parts; coordinate resources and priorities necessary to maintain the appropriate system condition.
  • Help develop new projects at the INL in area of specialty, including the development of proposals and business plans.
  • Ensure design modification meets the technical baseline requirements and applicable codes, standards, and regulations. Recommend and initiate modifications to support programmatic missions and operational goals and lead preparation of design efforts.
  • Develop, ensure adequacy of, and maintain configuration management of assigned systems. Maintain cognizance of system/equipment status and performance through walkdowns, inspections, and observations of operations.
  • Ensure consistency in operational characteristics among applicable documents such as drawings, technical manuals, and operating instructions.
  • Work with other engineering disciplines, customers, and analysts to develop requirements, perform conceptual and final designs, follow fabrication and inspection activities, lead mockup activities, support installation and testing of equipment and systems, and support development of integrated analyses to ensure that facility safety bases are met.
  • Lead, mentor, and coach less experienced engineers, as assigned.
  • Become fully qualified as an MFC System Engineer and/or Cognizant System Engineer per the requirements of an approved appointment letter.
