Description

LVSS House Leader and Fellows will supervise and lead a House community of rising 6th-9th grade students, ensuring their health and wellbeing in the house 24/7 during the program, generating curriculum to capitalize on the House system and Community, teaching an afternoon activity, leading a group in a afternoon House Cup activities, supervising during meals, supervising on weekend trips, providing supervision during study hall and house check-in times, assisting with evening activities, and assisting with the distribution of medications. In this leadership role, LVSS House Leader and Fellows will be entrusted with sensitive student information and must maintain confidentiality at all times. You will be expected to help create, plan and execute daily activities, manage classroom/dorm setup and other camp needs, and assist with managing in-person prefects as necessary.

The LVSS House Leader and Fellows work together with the Executive Director of LVSS and Dean of Students to provide support, guidance, and supervision to the students enrolled in the program.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise and lead a House community of rising 6th-9th grade students.
  • Ensure student health and well-being in the house 24/7 during the program.
  • Generate curriculum to capitalize on the House system and Community.
  • Teach an afternoon activity.
  • Lead house group in afternoon House Cup activities.
  • Supervise during meals.
  • Manage study hall and house check-in.
  • Assist with evening activities.
  • Assist with the distribution of medications.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information.
  • Create, plan, and execute daily activities.
  • Design a carpool system, supervise scholars, communicate with families, and lead carpool.
  • Manage classroom/dorm setup and other camp needs.
  • Assist with managing in-person prefects as necessary.
  • Instruct residential life curriculum through afternoon programs.
  • Set high standards and lead by example.
  • Earn and maintain the respect of students and staff.
  • Provide support and guidance to students.
  • Monitor and correct student behavior during activities, lunch, and study hall.
  • Supervise students during activities, lunch, and study hall.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Students and Dean of Activities to facilitate activities.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Faculty and Academics to create Harkness moves of the day.
  • Sit in on classes to mentor and monitor students.
  • Help troubleshoot technology.
  • Assist teachers or assistant teachers as needed.
Requirements
  • CPR and first aid certification preferred
  • BA or BS in a related field or a combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience supervising children and young adults, preferably in a school or camp environment. Examples include, but are not limited to: babysitting, peer tutoring, serving as the captain of a sports team, camp counselor (at School Camp or elsewhere), prefect (especially in a Lower house at Lawrenceville)
  • Prior residential supervision experience of children and/or young adults preferred
  • Successfully completed one year as an in-person prefect with additional leadership responsibilities as part of LVSS; or similar experience.
  • A desire to serve students and to participate fully in an engaging academic community.
  • Strong time management skills and be able to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all professional interactions with students, their families, peers, the leadership team and the larger community.
  • Tolerance for ambiguity and flexibility
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Able to remain calm in emergency situations.

Work Environment Characteristics and Physical Demand

  • Ability to lift and push up to 35lbs.
  • Must be capable of using a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard.
  • Ability to stand and walk around a three-story building for extended periods of time.
  • Uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopies, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Able to climb stairs.
  • Required to talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.
  • This person may spend a substantial amount of time outside.
  • Able to respond to emergency situations which may require running (up to one mile in some cases)
