HDR has an exceptional career opportunity for an experienced transportation industry professional to serve in a leadership position as our South Carolina Transportation Business Group Professional Services Leader (PSL). Professional Services is an area of our organization responsible for developing technical resources and maintaining a culture of quality. These practices improve our competitiveness and drive our growth.

As PSL, you will report to the South Carolina Transportation Business Group Manager (BGM) and work alongside the BGM to provide technical oversight and staffing resource assignments for projects across all of our offices within South Carolina (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, and Fort Mill). You will serve as supervisor for each of the Business Class Leads and Cross Sector Leads within the South Carolina Area who serve as the technical delivery supervisors for the following service areas: Bridge & Structures, Highways, Transportation Hydraulics, Traffic Engineering, Planning, Railway Design, Waterfront Infrastructure, Transit Engineering, Geotechnical, Environmental, and future Business Classes and Cross Sectors that are added in the Area. As PSL, you will support the continued career development of supervisors within the Area. You will collaborate closely with HDR's Transportation Professional Services Director to implement the Business Group's technical and quality initiatives within the South Carolina Area.

As PSL, you will be responsible for collaborating on technical delivery and business development for cross-business group opportunities with HDR's Water, Resources, Architecture, and Building Engineering Services business groups. You will also support recruiting efforts to attract and retain eminent talent for our local program.

Primary Responsibilities



  • Develop technical delivery skills for staff across all Area offices (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Fort Mill)
  • Work with Area TBG Manager to develop project management skills for staff across all Area offices (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Fort Mill)
  • Provide technical oversight and staff resource assignment to projects across Area offices
  • Work with Area TBG Project Delivery Leader to maintain quality management system program
  • Perform project reviews focusing on scheduling, leadership, and participation
  • Mentor delivery staff and develop technical learning paths
  • Implement technical and digital delivery evolution in collaboration with Professional Services Director
  • Coordinate with BC Leads to oversee workload reporting and coordinate the workload summaries with the Transportation Business Group Manager
  • Coordinate business processes with BGM consistent with Area, corporate policy, and HDR's matrix of authority (MOA)
  • Implement quality, standards, and best practices in projects across Area offices
  • Help serve as a champion for cross Business Group efforts.
  • Actively participate in recruiting efforts for the Area TBG program.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in a role focused on understanding staff needs to solve client issues in the area's transportation, permitting, planning, and design practice
  • History of successful project and/or program management with a focus on technical delivery and project leadership
  • History of successful leadership of technical staff in order to lead major BD campaigns and understanding of the framework and tools used to understand our client's needs and develop winning strategies, and marketing materials
  • Demonstrated success in cultivating technical staff by identifying and creating roles to develop teams to deliver projects as well as the training needed to continually grow staff and stay current on industry requirements
  • Success in initiating and managing growth
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A team-first collaborative attitude
  • Self-motivated requiring minimal oversight
  • Well organized with multi-tasking skills
  • Able to work under and meet tight deadlines
  • Well-developed analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to interact with design and construction teams positively and proactively
  • Document control experience (ProjectWise a plus)
  • South Carolina PE Required (demonstrated ability to obtain by comity within 6 months of hire is acceptable)
  • MS in relevant Engineering fields (Civil, Environmental) preferred
  • Prior transportation engineering and management consulting experience preferred
  • Local candidates are preferred

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering
  • 15 years related experience
  • A minimum 7 years project management experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required (Access experience would be plus)
  • Demonstrated leadership, business development and strategic planning skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
