As an Office Assistant Specialized in the Community and Health Record Services division, you will receive patient specimens, enter data, including laboratory requisitions and laboratory results into the laboratory information system, and assist laboratory technologists with limited laboratory tasks.

We Require

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Two years of experience performing office, administrative, and clerical duties

  • Post-secondary education may substitute for the experience requirement on a year-for-year basis.

  • Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test.

Job Contributions

  • Enters data from laboratory requisitions and laboratory results into patient records in the laboratory information system

  • Receives all patient specimens from outside entities and processes samples by recording information and routing specimens to the appropriate lab area

  • Acts as receptionist for laboratory customers; answers incoming telephone calls and routes to the appropriate person for response

  • Oversees the disposal of biohazardous materials and chemicals

Working Conditions

  • Work will occur in an office and field environment

  • You will work in an interactive team environment with long periods of standing and exposure to biohazard materials such as bodily specimens (blood, urine, and oral fluid)

  • Laboratory Personal Protective Equipment will be required

  • Travel will be required to attend the conference, training, and possibly varying work locations

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly, OR require walking or standing to a significant degree
