Responsibilities

Summary

This position is responsible for listening, understanding and translating spoken or written statements and translate them into English.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitates effective communication between two parties that do not speak a similar language by converting one spoken or written language to another to mediate discussions.
  • Attends conferences and meetings and act as official translator.
  • Translates for residents so they can understand center officials.
  • Relays concepts and ideas between languages.
  • Converts written materials from one language into another, such as books, publications, or web pages.
  • Creates a new text that reproduces the content and style of the original.
  • Edits and proofreads text to accurately reflect language.
  • Receives and submits assignments electronically.
  • Uses dictionaries and glossaries for references.
  • Utilizes computer-assisted translation.
  • Facilitates communication for residents with limited English proficiency.
  • Translates at meetings such as attorney-client meetings, preliminary hearings, arraignments, depositions and trials.
  • Interprets both legal terminology and colloquial language.
  • Reads aloud documents in a language other than that in which they were written.
  • Provides language services to healthcare residents with limited English proficiency.
  • Translates resident materials and informational brochures issued by medical facility.
  • Accompanies resident and facilitates communication between receiving party and visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or greater.
  • Experience as an interpreter or translator working with children or adolescents in a social services setting is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate between Spanish, K'iche, and English.
  • Above average interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels within the facility, in addition to a variety of outside customers with varying interests.
  • Excellent writing skills. Must be able to thoroughly and effectively document all work performed in the position.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
