A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Oceanographic Instrumentation Specialist to support the Northeast Fisheries Science Centers' Oceanography Branch. This branch aims to provide information on oceanography, lower-trophic levels and exploited species to a range of NOAA assessment products, such as stock assessments, integrated ecosystem assessments, and environmental impact assessments.

Primary Function:

The Oceanographic Instrumentation Specialist will support Ocean Acidification Sampling on the Joint NEFSC EcoMon/HabCam Scallop survey using a new prototype ocean acidification CHANOS II sensor. The candidate will operate, maintain and troubleshoot the CHANOS II instrument during the HabCam portion of the cruise, standing a 12-hour watch while at sea. They will also collect bottle samples for laboratory measurement of dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity and pH. Following the cruise, the candidate will carry out post cruise data processing, laboratory processing of samples, and post cruise maintenance of equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Conduct at sea sampling, standing a 12 hr watch for approximately 10 days at sea.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot the CHANOS II sensor at sea.
  • Collect dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity and pH samples at sea.
  • Carry out post cruise maintenance of equipment, at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
  • Carry out post cruise laboratory processing of samples at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
  • Carry out post cruise data processing (remote).


Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in marine chemistry, environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, biological oceanography, chemical oceanography or equivalent level of experience and 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with the operation of the CHANOS II sensor that will be used during the HabCam survey.
  • Familiarity with the processing of CHANOS II data.
  • Experience with the laboratory processing of carbonate chemistry samples.
  • Sea-going experience on research vessels.
  • Experience handling hazardous chemicals and conducting laboratory chemical analyses.
  • Experience working on vessels including the deployment of oceanographic instrumentation


Preferred Qualifications:



  • A Graduate level degree, with coursework in marine biology, ecology, or zoology and 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Technical proficiency in maintaining and operating shipboard sampling equipment, including pCO2 (partial pressure of CO2 instruments), TSG (thermosalinograph), CTD (conductivity-temperature depth instrument and attendant sensors).


Travel:



  • 25% Travel is anticipated to support research cruises.
