Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $94,400 to $135,600/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $94,400 to $176,800/year.

Work Location: Building 434 - 121

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the general direction of the Dean of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Science (MLPS) and the Assistant Dean for Building Construction and Space Management in MLPS, the Science Facilities Manager designs, analyzes and plans for use of building space as required for department instruction and research needs. The Science Facilities Manager must maintain a high degree of autonomy and self-direction in the face of ever-changing areas and disciplines within scientific research. Included are scientific and computational facilities which require that the manager have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the physical plant and building operations associated with research activities. The Science Facilities Manager, will analyze physical plant issues that will need to be considered and addressed which include air handling, electrical, plumbing, waste disposal of hazardous materials, and a thorough understanding of campus, county, State, and Federal policies concerning bio-safety and containment issues as well as standard building code and trade requirements. The Science Facilities Manager will be involved with architectural design and management of advanced research facilities. The Science Facilities Manager will review and assess requirements of research and instructional equipment with existing resources within the buildings. Will provided guidance with regard to campus policies, including safety and environmental health issues. Acts as liaison between department, Dean's Office and campus offices including Physical Facilities, Design and Construction Services and Environmental Health and Safety.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4-6 years of of experience in project and facilities management.
  • Advanced knowledge in the areas of building space planning, codes, capacity, security, fire safety, organization and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to the likelihood and consequences.
  • Advanced knowledge of architectural or engineering concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill regarding specialized research needs in space planning and advanced skills to effectively translate needs to processional architects and engineers.
  • Working knowledge in supervising facility maintenance and improvements along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance and custodial.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related area or field / or equivalent experience / training in research facilities, facilities management, engineering, construction management.
  • 4-6 years of experience working with research laboratory facilities.
  • 4-6 years of experience working in higher education.
  • Ability to work with fabricating metals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read blueprints and construction diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality while exercising discretion and good judgment.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • General knowledge of standard building maintenance activities such as custodial, landscaping, elevator maintenance, lighting maintenance and the costs and timelines required to complete them.
  • Ability to organize and implement facility management procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 20% Space Planning and Design - Coordinate and implement feasibility studies for design and development of specialized labs, office and instructional space. Analyzes and makes design recommendations with regard to mechanical, plumbing and electrical services. Using AutoCAD, develops advanced architectural and equipment floor plans for laboratory and office area remodels and estimates costs for construction. Provides a high degree of construction management and communications skills and regularly interfaces with campus DC&S officials and General Contractors. Types of facilities that would be designed and managed include wet and dry labs, clean rooms, labs with special air handling needs, labs that require specific bio-safety containment measures and computing facilities. Is the direct liaison between faculty, chairs, MSOs and other campus agencies including the Dean's Office, Physical Facilities (PF), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and DC&S. Develops space utilization and needs plans for instructional and research programs. Coordinates use of space among MLPS departments and other potential users outside of the Division, including interdisciplinary research centers and instructional labs. Consults with faculty recruits to assist with the development of plans related to research and infrastructure needs. Analyze existing space allocations and advise department chairs and faculty with regard to availability of resources to match needs. Anticipate and assist in remodel development and equipping new laboratories and facilities. Review research and instructional program needs including electrical, plumbing, computing wiring, HVAC requirements relative to existing inventory of department space.
  • 40% Facilities Operations and Management - Provides advice and guidance to departments with regard to campus safety, environmental health and hazard issues. Liaison with campus departments that develop and implement plans for research and instructional lab safety and hazards. Areas of concern include, but not limited to, toxic waste disposal, hazard communication, safety training, facility compliance with safety standards and other safety areas, such as bio-agents use, which may apply to laboratory sciences. In consultation with departments, assess department plans and policies for compliance with campus policies and regulations regarding laboratory safety issues. Analyzes and consults with faculty, researchers and department personnel to determine proper security plans to safeguard research material, data and controls. Advises department leadership and reviews department Emergency Plans. Using Campus' Building Management System (METASYS), analyze and monitor building systems for critical environments including bio-containment, clean rooms, cell culture rooms, data centers, clinical radiology suites, and aquaria for sea water animals. Uses a variety of instruments and data loggers to assess and survey building utility services. Working closely with Physical Facilities, ensures that proper preventive maintenance is being performed on all critical plan equipment. Such equipment might include environmental cold rooms, clean rooms, growth chambers, sterilizers, autoclaves, DI water systems, nitrogen plants, and data center cooling and stand-alone chillers.
  • 40% Special Projects and Lab Remodels - Under guidance and direction of the Assistant Dean of Space assists in variety of special building and space projects for departments and research programs within the Division of Mathematical, Life and Physical Science. Projects may include investigating space resources that may be offered to the division by donors, related policy and regulations governing off-campus building leases and uses, and working with staff from other divisions and Colleges to strategically plan for shared use of space. Interface with other campus offices and agencies such as Environmental Health and Safety and Physical Facilities. Monitors plant equipment maintained by Physical Facilities and advises building occupants of issues concerning equipment relative to occupant's needs and use. Working with new and existing faculty members, provide analysis, technical design and oversight for installation of advanced research equipment. Such equipment includes but not limited to superconducting magnets, laser systems, mass spectrometers, high-end microscopy, and clinical imaging equipment(fMRI)
