Duties, Responsibilities & Other

Project Landscape Architect:

Project Landscape Architect at KCI, you will plan, design, and manage landscape architecture projects, which includes producing design documents, interacting with clients, and overseeing project implementation. This position required a blend of leadership, technical expertise, and effective communication skills.

The key responsibilities of this role include:

Project Execution and Technical Oversight:

    Dependent upon the nature of the project, typical tasks will involve the following:
    • Communicating with Project Team members and/or Clients to uncover project needs and provide compelling solutions.
    • Leading site design or collaboratively participating in site design process to develop and refine multiple site layout options. Candidate should have the ability to efficiently create uniquely desirable, artistic and inspirational site designs.
    • Leading the landscape design strategy by assessing existing site conditions, client maintenance expectations, and suggesting plant palettes and layouts. It is anticipated that this task will on occasion require hands-on drafting of Landscape Plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D software.
    • Engaging with the Project Team, Client, Owner and/or Community throughout the design process as required to facilitate input and present project progress.
    • Assisting in the development of accurate construction drawings and cost estimates.
    • Completing site visits and inspections as needed for projects.
  • Demonstrate and maintain a high knowledge of landscape architecture trends and techniques, specifically within the realms of sustainable design and restoration, parks and recreation planning and design, placemaking and landscape design/horticulture.
  • Produce and/or Review accurate and attractive report and presentation graphics. Typical software utilized includes Adobe Creative Suite Programs, SketchUp and Lumion. Proficiency in these programs is a plus; however, the successful candidate's professional development will be supported through training as appropriate and requested by the candidate.
  • Review and seal plans as appropriate for the role assumed on assigned projects.

Project and Task Management & Leadership

At KCI, project teams are formed based upon best fit for client needs and technical expertise; therefore, it will be common for this candidate to serve as Project Lead Landscape Architect in a supporting role to larger multi-disciplinary planning and design projects, while also able to serve as a Project Manager for those projects that most closely align with the candidate's professional portfolio.

When acting as Project Lead Landscape Architect in a supporting role to the overall project, the following are key responsibilities of this role:

  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required.
  • Prepare inter-practice agreements and/or outside requests as required.
  • Provide technical oversight for projects.
  • Provide input for regular progress reports to the Project Manager for all tasks assigned.
  • Prepare, review and seal all plans under direct responsibility.

When acting as Project Manager for the project, the following additional responsibilities will be expected of this role:

  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub-consultants as required.
  • Prepare inter-practice agreements and/or outside requests as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the client, maintaining open communication and addressing client concerns or inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Effectively manage the project scope, ensuring alignment with client expectations and project requirements.
  • Maintain project schedules, proactively identifying and addressing potential delays or conflicts to minimize impact on project timelines. These items should be communicated both internally to the Project Team and externally to the Client.
  • Manage the work routine of all assigned project team members and assign project roles and tasks as required to complete the project.
  • Meet regularly with the project team to review progress and upcoming milestone deadlines.
  • Monitor project budgets and expenditures, implementing cost-control measures as needed to ensure projects remain within budgetary constraints.
  • Uphold high-quality standards throughout project execution, overseeing quality assurance processes and ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.
  • Provide technical oversight for projects and staff.
  • Perform or coordinate review and seal of all project deliverables to maintain compliance with KCI ISO standards.

Training, Development, and Compliance:

  • Mentor and train staff, particularly fellow Landscape Designers and Landscape Architects.
  • Conduct after-action assessments and suggest solutions to improve the efficiency of project production and quality of project deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders and project team members to drive project success and foster a collaborative working environment.
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures.
  • Ensure projects comply with ISO standards.

Financial Management and Reporting:

When acting as Project Lead Landscape Architect in a supporting role to the overall project, the following are key responsibilities of this role:

  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting project scope.
  • Achieve or exceed budgets individual utilization targets.

When acting as Project Manager for the project, the following additional responsibilities will be expected of this role:

  • Responsible for negotiating contract terms, scope and fees with a client/subconsultant.
  • Responsible for developing project schedules from inception to completion. Should be able to recognize areas where tasks can be done concurrently to optimize schedule.
  • Develop contracts for clients/ subconsultants.
  • Report monthly proposal/business development results to Practice Leader.
  • Chart and provide project performance results.
  • Deliver all projects on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope.
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Responsible for project cash management (WIP/AR) and providing comments to Finance and Operations monthly.
  • Set-up new projects and provide weekly new project data to the practice leader.
  • Search for ways to improve efficiency while lowering project cost.

Business Development and Marketing:

  • Responsible for assisting the Practice Leader by participating in project opportunity evaluations, project partner/consultant suggestions, and the preparation of supporting qualification/experience documents as needed.
  • Assist project closeout with an overall project write up and pictures of completed project for marketing/resume use.
  • Be involved in at least one industry and/or community organization.

Education and/or Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience in planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring Landscape Architecture projects
  • Proven experience in project management roles, with a track record of successful project delivery.


Qualifications

Education and/or Skills Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field (AEC Industry) and minimum of 2 years of related professional experience, or 6 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Participation in continuing education and professional development programs.
  • Possess potential leadership abilities to inspire and motivate project teams.
  • Organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Technical knowledge in the specific field of the project.
  • Knowledge of project management software and tools, with the ability to develop and maintain comprehensive project plans and documentation.
  • Understanding of industry standards and best practices related to project management, quality assurance, and safety protocols.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement effective solutions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Negotiation skills to manage contracts, scope changes, and stakeholder agreements effectively.
  • An understanding of accounting principles to effectively manage project budgets, financial reporting, and resource allocation.

Education and/or Work Experience Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in related field (AEC Industry)

Certificates, licenses, and/or Registrations Required:

  • Successful completion of the KCI PM Training and Contract Training within first 6 months of employment.
