NP or PA - Breast Surgery Program - Full Time

Mary Washington Hospital seeks a highly motivated Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our NAPBC-accredited breast surgery team.

The APP is actively involved in providing formal and informal care, education, and review and development of specific policies, procedures, and practice guidelines. The APP must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and an understanding of the multidisciplinary care that breast cancer patients receive. The position will include managing a daily clinic with a mix of new and established patients. The position is predominantly in the outpatient setting, though occasional inpatient needs may arise.

This individual will assess patients on a physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and functional level, develop a treatment plan, order and interpret diagnostic components of the plan, and prescribe non-pharmacological and pharmacological agents.

The APP functions professionally as an active member of our breast care team under a practice agreement with the supervising physician and operationally under the Vice President Nursing Services and/or the designee.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • The ideal candidate will be interested in women's health, highly organized, a team player, and enjoy working independently. The ideal candidate will have, or be willing to learn and develop, the skills to:
  • Perform directed history and physical exam for new breast patients
  • Assess breast cancer risk using available risk assessment tools
  • Evaluate and manage common breast complaints such as breast pain, nipple discharge, breast mass, mastitis
  • Evaluate and develop a risk management plan for patients at increased breast cancer risk
  • Evaluate, develop a plan, and treat conditions for post operative patients
  • Acquire and use basic breast ultrasound skills
  • Attend tumor board meetings, breast team meetings, and NAPBC meetings, as well as occasional attendance at various other meetings
  • Meets all the requirements of the practice agreement with the supervising physician under the regulations and requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Delineation of Privileges:

  • Obtain, record and dictate medical histories
  • Perform, record and dictate physical examinations
  • Make daily rounds, record progress notes, write routine comfort and diet orders, order laboratory tests and non-invasive examinations, write approved routine orders, and change dressings
  • Prepare patients for discharge from the hospital
  • Dictate discharge and transfer summaries
  • Evaluate patients who require a surgical consult

Clinical procedures:

  • Ultrasound-guided needle aspirations of the breast or axilla (seroma or abscess or cyst)
  • Ultrasound-guided injections
  • Suture and drainage catheter removal
  • Skin punch biopsies
  • Incision and drainage

Communication:

  • Provide ongoing follow-up/survivorship care for breast cancer patients
  • Provide ongoing follow-up for patients at elevated lifetime risk of breast cancer
  • Provide follow-up for other benign breast conditions as needed
  • Refer to other specialties as needed (medical oncology, plastic surgery, genetics)
  • Call patients with results and recommendations from imaging and biopsies

Other

  • Complete insurance forms and home health forms
  • Maintain written material; teach devices and special equipment for use of personnel and patients.
  • Participate in breast and endocrine surgery home call
  • Provide support and mentorship with regards to GME

Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse licensed to practice in Virginia or eligible, required
  • MSN, required
  • Virginia Physician Assistant license required.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire
  • Current Virginia state certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, required
  • Proficient leadership skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively/collaboratively as part of a team, developing productive working relationships with diverse groups of people.
