Johnson County Mental Health Center is looking for qualified applicants to fill the position of Mental Health Nurse (RN) in the newly established Adult Crisis Center. In conjunction with our Behavioral Health Nursing team, the Mental Health RN will work to help support this 24-hour facility which provides services for adult clients. In addition, the nurse will assist with admissions at the Youth Crisis Stabilization Center which serves adolescents. This position will also work closely with the clinical team of Clinicians, psychiatrists, service coordinators and direct care staff to meet the individual mental health needs of the clients. Shift for this position will be Saturday/Sunday 7:00 am - 7:30 pm or Saturday/Sunday 7:00 pm - 7:30 am.

Job Description

Other responsibilities include:

    Provides comprehensive nursing services; assesses the holistic needs of individuals by incorporating family and environmental factors; collects and documents patient health history; measures and records vital signs; completes health assessments and performs limited exams; obtains, processes, and handles lab specimens; manages, controls and implements medication administration programs; performs minor procedures and treatments within designated area of specialty.
  • Assesses psychiatric symptoms, psychosocial issues, likely side effects from medications, potential medical problems, mental status, and possible need for change in treatment regimen through in-person (R.N. Medication Reviews) or phone contact with patients/collateral historians; consults with the psychiatrist in-person or by phone; verifies psychiatric provider orders; explains any ordered changes to patient/family; coordinates changes in treatment with other providers/pertinent personnel (e.g. case managers, pharmacists, residential substance dependence program staff, etc.); monitors response and gives feedback as indicated; administers intramuscular injections as ordered by the psychiatric provider; identifies and coordinates the patient's clinical needs with other members of the treatment team (e.g. therapists, case managers); tracks and makes available for the psychiatrist necessary lab and other investigative results that have been complete; administers and tracks clinically necessary rating scales (e.g. AIMS to monitor for development of tardive dyskinesia), and refers to the psychiatric provider to evaluate.
  • Completes and submits documentation regarding patient care and condition; reviews quality and effectiveness of services provided and documented by other service providers.
  • Provides patients and families with supportive resources; educates patients in areas impacting health, wellness, and daily living activities; develops and provides specialized health training and education to staff.
  • Provides case management, care coordination, referral and follow-up to individuals and/or families; evaluates outcomes, effectiveness of plans, and makes changes as necessary.


Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:

High school or equivalent and a Vocational, Associate's, or Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other Nursing program that meets the requirements for the Registered Nurse license are required. Licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas and a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record is required.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Three years of nursing experience in Psychiatric inpatient or outpatient settings is preferred.

Physical, Environmental, and Special Working Conditions:

All County employees may be called upon to assist other departments in a declared emergency situation.
