Job Summary:

The Department of Psychology is seeking an Academic Advisor who will provide academic advising and resources to undergraduate students who are pursuing a major in Psychology. The department currently serves approximately 1800 declared majors. The Academic Advisor will join the Psychology Advising Team and collaborate with Department of Psychology staff and faculty to provide comprehensive and holistic student services to undergraduate majors.

This position will provide individual, equitable, and inclusive academic advising services through remote and in-person appointments to assigned and exploring undergraduate students. They will collaborate with departmental and university partners, execute events and workshops for undergraduates interested in or currently majoring in Psychology. The Academic Advisor will develop material resources to aid in the exploration of the academic discipline and involvement opportunities. They will also Implement initiatives surrounding student success, community building, and overall academic advising support services.

In addition to home departments, advisors in L&S are a part of an active advising community and interdependent system. During the academic year, L&S advisors meet monthly as a consortium for information sharing and ongoing training. All L&S advisors also contribute to the campus Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, for a couple weeks.


Responsibilities:
Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

  • 20% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • 30% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • 15% Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
  • 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • 15% Proactively engages students as needed
  • 5% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college

Education:

Preferred
Master's Degree in student development or related field desirable


Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
- Minimum two years of academic advising experience
- Experience with general curricular elements and structures
- Experience with conducting workshops and planning events
- Knowledge of policies related to student privacy
- Evidence of strong communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with providing holistic student services
- Experience in supporting initiatives aimed at engaging and supporting the success of undergraduate students from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment
- Experience in supporting new programming
- Evidence of collaborating with university partners

Successful candidates will also possess self-motivation, creativity, confidence in public speaking/presentations, and attention to detail.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $53,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $53,000 - $68,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
