Pre-Doctoral Fellow Biobehavioral HIV

Summary: Responsibilities: 70% research time 10% didactic time and up to 20% field work as appropriate for the fellow. Scheduling for position may involve rotating through varied hospital clinical services as appropriate for the individual*s training plan.
The 70% research time will be spent on HIV-related psychosocial and behavioral research for adolescents and young adults. The fellow will be matched with a research mentor based on their interests and experience and the availability of potential mentors. Individually tailored goals will be established. The Fellow will be exposed to various aspects of HIV research through participation in the following activities:
Review of relevant literature and participation in research activities in the mentor*s lab. The fellow will complete a small pilot project or examine data from the mentor*s lab in a relevant area. Projects may involve infected affected or at-risk youth in behavioral or biologic research. From this work the Fellow will use prepare manuscripts and posters for national conferences.
A formal didactic curriculum complements hands-on research and supervision. Core areas of learning include models of behavior and its change behavioral assessment psychiatric and substance abuse disorders biology of HIV and current antiretroviral treatment. Opportunities for training include research methods/design and statistical analysis; research ethics such as informed consent research with minors and scientific integrity; and grant writing. A HIV biobehavioral journal club and regular workshops/conferences sponsored by the Center for AIDS research provides relevant didactics. Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Graduate or professional work or advanced degree; or equivalent experience.
For those from schools of psychology or public health completion of some requirements for a doctoral degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Short-term trainees must be medical students dental students students in other health-professional programs. To be eligible for short-term predoctoral research training positions students must be enrolled in good standing and must have completed at least one quarter or semester in a program leading to a clinical or health related doctorate before participating in the training program. Individuals already matriculated in a formal research degree program in the health sciences or those holding a research doctorate a master*s degree or a combined health-professional/research doctorate normally are not eligible for short-term training positions. Within schools of pharmacy only individuals who are candidates for the PharmD degree are eligible for short-term research training positions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a hospital or university setting and office environment and may have frequent exposure to patient care.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within the department*s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
