POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is part of the team concept which is devoted to the delivery of primary care in an ambulatory setting with an emphasis on prevention and health maintenance. The Medical Assistant will be required to apply principles of comprehensive, community-based, patient-centered, developmentally appropriate, and culturally and linguistically appropriate care coordination. The Medical Assistant is expected to support the provider in the assessment, examination, treatment, and other management of patients in the clinical setting. Strong customer service, communication, teamwork, and multi-tasking skills are a must. Perform duties and carry out the necessary functions required in accordance with established policies and procedures. All duties performed must reflect Clinical Skill Checklist competency as determined during the orientation and probation periods and updated as recommended by the supervisor.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Obtain vital signs; prepare and maintain examination and treatment areas for patient care. Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments. Perform pre-visit screening following MHSI and provider-approved protocols.
  • Prepare and administer oral, topical, inhaled, intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and other medications as directed by the supervising provider and as permitted by Wisconsin law.
  • Identify and document patient care gaps (such as overdue preventive screenings, immunizations, chronic condition follow-ups, and labs) in the EMR and proactively bring them to the provider's attention so they can be addressed and closed during the patient encounter.
  • Screen and follow up on test results per protocol. Collect and process specimens correctly. Perform electrocardiography and respiratory testing. Schedule, coordinate, and monitor appointments.
  • Evaluate and record patient history using critical thinking skills within the EMR.
  • Document patient communication and clinical treatments timely, accurately, and appropriately.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain patient medical records. Maintain medication and immunization records in EMR and Wisconsin Immunization Registry.
  • Review provider schedules daily to ensure appropriateness and necessary equipment availability.
  • Review charts and lab reports prior to patient arrival in accordance with departmental protocol.
  • Communicate effectively, adapting to individual understanding, recognizing and respecting cultural diversity. Employ professional telephone and interpersonal techniques and apply medical terminology appropriately.
  • Receive, prioritize, store, and maintain electronic information. Perform routine maintenance of clinical equipment. Apply computer and other electronic equipment techniques to support operations.
  • Identify community resources for health maintenance and disease prevention to meet patient needs. Serve as communication liaison between the provider and patient, and as patient advocate/health coach within team-based care.
  • Educate patients, within scope of practice and as directed by supervising provider, on health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment plan compliance.
  • Maintain confidentiality and perform tasks within legal and ethical boundaries.
  • Comply with established risk management and safety procedures.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies.
  • Participate in quality control, quality improvement, and organizational strategic plans.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental and organizational meetings.
  • Maintain skills through continuing education and recognize credentialing criteria.
  • Participate in orientation and training of new Medical Assistant employees.
  • Understand that location, department, or provider assignment may change at the discretion of the Clinical Nurse Manager to meet organizational needs.
  • Assist with providing extended/urgent care coverage as needed at various MHSI sites.
  • Seek direction and support as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Certification as a Medical Assistant, Associates of Science with AAMA certification is required. Certification in CPR is mandatory.
  • Experience: Two years or more in a clinic, physician's office or hospital setting preferred. Nursing students who have completed at least two nursing clinical rotations will be considered for this position.
  • Expertise: Basic knowledge of Medical Terminology is mandatory. Proficiency in conversational Spanish is a plus. Must demonstrate the ability to handle and deal with multiple situations effectively. Must have empathy and compassion for all patients and staff. Demonstrate the ability to treat all patients and staff with dignity and respect. Must perform in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Must demonstrate the ability to work efficiently, effectively, and productively with Providers and staff. They have demonstrated excellence in customer service. The ability to communicate with the provider, charge nurse, and lead nurse in a cooperative, respectful and constructive manner is essential.
  • Language:Comprehend and use basic language either written or spoken to communicate information and ideals. Intermediate to advanced computer and EMR proficiency.
