Examples of Duties
-
- Routine Maintenance of Sanitary Sewer Mains: Operate the sanitary sewer jet and examine the mains for any issues as part of maintenance and evaluation activities.
- Routine Maintenance of Catch Basins and Manholes: Perform hydro-excavation using a vacuum excavator.
- Equipment Operation: Operate trucks and other equipment commonly used in construction and maintenance activities.
- Assistance in Building Storm Sewers: Assist in constructing storm sewers, catch basins, and sanitary manholes, including shoring job sites as necessary.
- Asphalt Work: Conduct crack filling and pothole repairs with asphalt, including patchwork on streets, alleys, curbs, and sidewalks.
- Emergency Work Assistance: Assist with emergencies, including snow and ice control, flooding, windstorms, natural disasters, and sanitary sewer pumping.
- Concrete Finishing and Labor: Execute concrete finishing and related tasks, including all preparatory work such as excavation, grading, and constructing forms for pavements, curbs, and sidewalks

Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- You need two (2) years of recent paid experience in finishing concrete.
- Experience in street and sewer construction and maintenance, especially in laying block, setting forms, and laying asphalt, is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
- You must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License and a good driving record.
- Within 12 months of your appointment, you must obtain a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (Class B, C with air brakes) and a Tanker (N) endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- You should be familiar with the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in public works construction and maintenance.
- You must be aware of job hazards and adhere to safe work practices.
- You should be skilled in using standard hand tools and equipment.
- The ability to perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks and interpret rough sketches or layouts is essential.
- You should be able to operate both standard and automatic vehicles.
- You must understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
- You should have good mechanical aptitude and make sound judgments.
- You must handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment and quickly learn new software.
- You should be familiar with using standard computer applications and mobile devices, such as iPads.
- You must show the ability to drive innovation and support continuous improvement.
- Recent experience interacting with the public is a plus.
The Maintenance Repairer must have a strong work ethic, integrity, initiative, accountability, and emotional intelligence to perform effectively. This role requires availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Employees may need to work long or unusual hours during emergencies and may be required to serve on rotational watch duty.
