JOB TITLE:

Academic Advising Professional- Advising Career & Exploratory Studies (ACES)

JOB PURPOSE:

Coordinate and administer academic advising functions for University of Wyoming ACES students by providing comprehensive guidance on university and college requirements, policies, and procedures. Support prospective and current students, as well as parents and staff, through individualized academic planning and decision-making. Promote student success and contribute to academic retention efforts through proactive outreach, engagement, and collaboration with campus partners.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide academic, personal, and, when appropriate, career advising to students served through the ACES (Advising, Career, and Exploratory Studies) office at the University of Wyoming, with a focus on intentional, student-centered guidance that supports academic success and degree progression.
  • Assist ACES students facing academic challenges-including those who are undeclared, on probation, admitted with support, suspended, or reinstated-by helping them identify barriers and develop strategies for improvement through individualized academic recovery planning and consistent follow-up.
  • Actively contribute to academic retention and student success efforts by engaging in proactive outreach to at-risk students, providing timely communication, and implementing early intervention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records for those advised through ACES, including advising notes, academic plans, petitions, and other supporting documentation in accordance with University of Wyoming policies and confidentiality standards.
  • Stay current with academic advising best practices and ACES-specific procedures by participating in professional development, advisor trainings, national/regional conferences, advisor observations, and developing a personal advising philosophy.
  • Utilize University of Wyoming advising technologies-including Navigate, WyoWeb, and Banner-to provide accessible, informed, and efficient advising services, including both in-person and online appointments.
  • Support students in completing and submitting academic petitions and related forms while ensuring timeliness, academic integrity, and clear documentation throughout the process.
  • Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students served through ACES by engaging in respectful, strengths-based advising practices.
  • Participate in ACES programming and initiatives, contributing to a collaborative, student-first advising environment that supports the diverse needs of the students served.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

Experience: 1 year work-related experience

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy .

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.

One or more years of experience in academic advising, student support, or a related student-facing role in higher education, with a focus on academic challenges and degree progression.

Knowledge of student development theory, particularly for exploratory, at-risk, and diverse student populations, with the ability to apply this in practice.

Experience supporting students on academic probation, admitted with support, or navigating reinstatement or suspension, including identifying barriers and creating recovery plans.

Strong communication, active listening, and relationship-building skills, with an ability to provide compassionate, strengths-based advising.

Proficiency with advising technologies such as Navigate, Banner, and WyoWeb, for efficient in-person and online advising.

Familiarity with academic policies, FERPA regulations, and retention-focused advising practices.

Experience with proactive outreach, early intervention, and academic planning to support student success.

Ability to collaborate within a team while independently managing a caseload and contributing to ACES programming.

WORK LOCATION:

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work on campus.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States. Sponsorship for H-1B work authorization or work visa is not available for this position.
