Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for an AI Innovation Attorney. This position could be based in any of our U.S. offices (Austin; Chicago; Boston; Houston; Los Angeles; New York; Menlo Park; Orange County; Portland; Sacramento; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Seattle; Washington DC; or Wheeling, WV) and consideration given for 100% remote US locations. The Opportunity: The AI Innovation Attorney will support the adoption, integration, and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) - including generative AI and other legal technology - in the Firm's delivery of legal services. This position is part of our Innovation team and collaborates across offices, business units, practice groups, and departments to execute on projects and initiatives. The role reports to the Global Head of Practice Innovation and works in close collaboration with all members and leadership of the Innovation team.
Responsibilities
The Innovation Attorney will lead and support the adoption, integration, and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and other legal technology in the practice of law, across all offices and practice areas. Responsibilities include:
- Support, coordinate, and lead projects to facilitate the adoption and utilization of AI and other legal technology in the practice of law (including generative AI, large language models, agentic AI, and other future legal tech solutions), including:
- Collaborating with business until and practice group innovation and practice support attorneys on the adoption and utilization of AI and other legal technology in their respective groups
- Serving as a one-on-one resource for lawyers on incorporating generative AI and other legal technology into their practice, including supporting individual training, questions, identifying workflows ripe for technology, troubleshooting, and ideation
- Developing, collaborating on, and delivering training, hands-on workshops, design-thinking sessions, and other learning opportunities on AI, generative AI, practice use cases, and other legal technology for firm lawyers and timekeepers
- Support, coordinate and lead projects to identify and promote practice-specific use cases for AI, including:
- Facilitating individual, team, practice group, and business unit sessions and workshops to identify use cases
- Creating use case materials for different practice areas, roles, and phases of matters and engagements
- Collaborating with business until and practice group innovation and practice support attorneys to identify and promote use cases within their respective groups
- Supporting the creation and expansion of prompt and example libraries
- Oversee and support associate AI & Tech Ambassadors from various practice groups, including:
- Helping to define the role, responsibilities, and opportunities for AI & Tech Ambassadors
- Training, supporting, and serving as a direct subject-matter expert for AI & Tech Ambassadors
- Facilitating regular collaboration between AI & Tech Ambassadors, and helping to drive the program
- Monitor and serve as subject matter expert on the Firm's practice-related generative AI tools, including:
- Maintaining a robust understanding of all tools' features, functions, limitations, enhancements, and roadmaps
- Developing best practices and other programs to help drive teams and tasks to the "right" resources
- Regularly evaluating the firm's use of AI and other legal technology through internal data, external benchmarking, and monitoring trends in the market
- Identifying and collaborating with tech providers on feature requests, tech limitations, and additional and creative opportunities for improvement
- Vetting, leading pilots of, and supporting the onboarding, rollout and adoption of technology to support the legal practice
- Communicate and consult with clients on AI, generative AI, and other legal tech solutions for the practice
- Develop and maintain case studies for use in marketing and business development, and develop and maintain portal pages and other resources relating to Innovation and legal technology
Qualifications
- Juris doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited university or college and admission to practice in good standing in a US jurisdiction required.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience as an attorney in a large law firm.
- Sophisticated technical skills and know-how, including experience with generative AI, large language models and machine learning in the practice of law.
- Substantial experience with legal technology, including usage and driving adoption.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to present complex ideas to attorneys, managers, clients, and the public in layman's terms.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization and/or specific direction exists.
- Familiarity with best practices and technology to manage workflows, documents and communications.
- Excellent analytical, project management, prioritization, and organization skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently with good judgment, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and quickly prioritize projects.
- Ability to work collaboratively at all organizational levels.
- Flexible team player with ability to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, coupled with a positive outlook; public relations and diplomacy skills must be excellent.
- Availability to travel as necessary.

Compensation and Benefits The expected salary range for this position is between:
- California Major Markets* $200,000 - $300,000
- New York City $200,000 - $300,000
- National $200,000 - $250,000
* California Major Markets includes San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Orange County, Santa Monica. All other California locations fall within National range.
