Hourly: $21.50- $24 per hour

Position Summary:

Children's Aid runs a summer day camp in Chappaqua, NY that brings together children from Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester. Campers and staff are bused to and from the camp each day. The purpose of this camp is to provide traditional summer camp activities (swimming, arts & crafts, sports, horsemanship, etc.) in the context of relationship building. The children who attend this camp are from different socio-economic, cultural, and racial backgrounds, and range in age from 6-13

The Activity Specialist is responsible to manage a special activity (Archery, Initiatives, Cooking, Project Based Learning, Dance, Music, Drama, or Art). Each special area has specific structure and outcomes as noted below:

Essential Duties:



  • Maintain all the supplies and equipment used in the program, keeping the storage area clean.
  • Attend 3 days of training and orientation prior to camp.
  • Fulfill job activities not listed here important to the success of the camp.
  • Conduct a sequential curriculum of activities to build skill in the specialty. Develop a basic, beginner level sequence, and a special elective sequence for deeper learning.
  • Drama, Dance, and Music Specialist engage groups of campers in developing a performance piece to be shown during the camp shows. Works with one group at a time and for 5 sessions each.
  • Art Specialist engages campers in art projects to build self-expression using different media. Works with 2 groups at a time for 14 or 15 sessions.
  • Cooking Specialist engages campers in preparation of food and learning about sanitary conditions and good nutrition. Works with one group at a time and for 5 sessions each.
  • Archery follows defined curriculum and requires certification as an archery instructor. Level 1 Instructor from US Archery Required. Works with one group at a time and for 5 sessions each.
  • Initiatives follows a sequence defined by Project Adventure Phys Education Curriculum and is supervised by the Camp Director. Works with one group at a time and for 5 sessions each.
  • Personal development specialty worked with each group for specific session that range from 5-15 and focus on personal development activities like mindfulness, creativity or character-building sessions to complete a project developed in collaboration with the Program Director to an age appropriate challenge.
  • Project Bases Learning specialty worked with each group for 5 sessions to complete a project developed in collaboration with the Program Director to an age appropriate challenge.
  • Unless otherwise specified, supervised by the Program Director


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Experience in teaching and /or performing in one of the Specialty Areas.
  • Possess any certification required for that area.
  • Previous experience as a teacher or activity leader.
