The Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) - A&H Reinsurance is responsible for leading and managing the underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, and risk management for the Accident & Health reinsurance business. The CUO will provide strategic direction, ensure underwriting discipline, drive profitable growth, and maintain robust risk selection standards aligned with the company's risk appetite and business goals. Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement the underwriting strategy for A&H reinsurance across key markets and territories. Provide thought leadership and direction to the underwriting team.
- Portfolio Management: Manage and optimize the A&H reinsurance portfolio performance, ensuring profitability, diversification, and alignment with corporate risk appetite.
- Risk Assessment & Pricing: Oversee underwriting guidelines and practices. Approve large or complex risks, ensuring proper pricing, terms, and conditions based on sound actuarial and underwriting principles.
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of underwriters. Promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountability.
- Market Engagement: Maintain and build strong relationships with clients, brokers, and business partners. Represent the company at industry events and in client negotiations.
- Governance & Compliance: Ensure underwriting practices comply with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and global standards. Collaborate closely with legal, compliance, and actuarial functions.
- Innovation & Product Development: Collaborate with actuarial and product development teams to innovate and refine A&H products and solutions, responding to market trends and emerging risks.
- Reporting & Analytics: Provide executive-level reporting and analysis on underwriting performance, trends, and emerging risks. Partner with finance and actuarial teams on financial planning and reserving.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, Actuarial Science, or a related field (MBA or actuarial credentials preferred).
- 15+ years of experience in underwriting within the (re)insurance industry, with a strong focus on A&H.
- Proven leadership experience in managing large, global underwriting teams.
- Deep technical knowledge of A&H products, global markets, and regulatory environments.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to manage both technical detail and high-level vision.
