Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
A B.S. in science related field; a minimum of 10 years experience in applied poultry research; a minimum of 10 years experience working in a high caseload avian diagnostic virology laboratory with extensive knowledge of classical and molecular virology techniques, virus isolation for avian viruses, PCR/RT- PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, sequencing, and sequence analysis; experience working with chickens and turkeys.
Position Summary
This is a senior staff position in the Research and Diagnostic Virology lab at the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center. The Virology lab studies and performs research to identify and characterize viruses from poultry specimens, sequence viral genomes, and understand viral evolution. This work also engages in vaccine candidate evaluation, vaccine development, and evaluation of vaccines in controlled trials. Diagnostic services in this lab overlap many of the above descriptions, however in a diagnostic capacity. The diagnostic branch of the lab studies and performs diagnostic services related to the detection, isolation, and characterization of avian viruses significant to the poultry industry.

This position will oversee both the Research and Diagnostic branches of the Virology lab. On the diagnostic side, this position will be responsible for review of clinical case submissions and assignment to appropriate lab testing. For both research and diagnostic virology, this position will supervise and/or perform virus isolation and molecular techniques including sequence analysis, troubleshoot lab processes, review lab results, write new and review current standard operating procedures, and implement a quality management system. This individual will also be responsible for supervising research professionals and masters/PhD students working within the Virology laboratory.

  • Standard laboratory skills as well as experience with classical virology and molecular biological techniques.
  • Experience supervising research projects, including experimental design.
  • Experience working with chickens in research studies.
  • Ability to critically analyze existing research, collect and organize data, and report findings.
  • General computer knowledge
  • Good communication & time management skills.

  • Perform classical and molecular tests on research samples and domestic/international diagnostic samples.
  • Review all research and diagnostic results and data generated. Review diagnostic case submissions, schedule testing services and review results prior to entry into lab information management system (LIMS). Enter and review est codes for billing to ensure accurate invoicing.
  • Analyze research and diagnostic sequence data. Enter results into research records or diagnostic lab LIMS.
  • Troubleshoot issues and implement strategies to resolve.
  • Supervise research professionals and diagnostic lab technicians in daily operations.
  • Communicate lab results to laboratory director and clinicians.
  • Facilitate testing of STAT cases.

  • Analyze and enter both research and diagnostic data, and generate written summaries for research activities and diagnostic lab clinicians and/or clients.
  • Write standard operating procedures for both research and diagnostic branches, and review current procedures for implementation in the quality management program.
  • Perform employee proficiency evaluations on annual basis, and implement corrective actions as needed.
