Occupational Therapy Specialist - Assistive Technology for Computer Access

Provides direct services to individuals with disabilities (clients), working with family, caregivers, school professionals, employment supervisors, recreational program directors as necessary in the Assistive Technology Unit.

Provides evaluation, implementation, and follow-up services to clients attempting to achieve increased performance in academic work, employment, and/or recreation. Assesses for appropriate assistive technology in areas that include computer access via adaptive hardware and software, ergonomics, access to augmentative communication. Consult with rehabilitation engineers and equipment specialists when device modification or custom design is required.

Provides clinical supervision to DHD 590 - Field Experience students.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assesses and evaluates client abilities and environmental factors in their home, school, worksite, and recreation setting for barriers to the client's independence goals.
  • Investigates, analyzes, and determines the most appropriate combination of assistive technology devices and options which will enable the client to maximize their independence and safety. Assistive technology to include devices for alternative computer input methods (e.g., keyboards, voice input, eyegaze, headmouse), different formats for computer output, ergonomic workstation components, accessibility modification, wayfinding). Maintains current product information regarding assistive technology and procedures.
  • Conducts background research to identify appropriate third-party payers, and documents the recommended assistive technology being submitted for prior approval before acquisition or reimbursement after issuance. Communicates with third-party payers in response to inquiries.
  • Following third-party payer prior approval, orders devices and performs specified modifications. Receives, sets up, and checks devices for proper functioning prior to issuance.
  • At issuance of devices, performs all set up, adjustments, and testing with client. Performs in-the-field corrective work as necessary.
  • Compiles and analyzes data on assistive technology provided to clients. Examines outcomes with respect to independence level, safety in the community, academic participation, and/or employment using accepted and/or modified assistive technology outcomes measurements methods (e.g., Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Devices Scale (PIADS), Scherer's Matching the Person to Technology (MPT) System).
  • Assists with preparation materials and content for presentations and demonstrations give to clients, families, caregivers, school professionals, UIC faculty/staff/students on topics such as current research and best practices of assistive technology, access methods, funding policies, costs and maintenance of devices.
  • Presents research results on assistive technology best practices at state, regional, and national conferences.
  • Contributes to research articles with other project team members.
  • Contributes modules on specific assistive technology to academic coursework offered by the department.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
  • Provides clinical supervision to students enrolled in DHD 590, Field Experience.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. Licensed as a registered occupational therapist by the State of Illinois.
    2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing duties comparable to those listed for the Occupational Therapist.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree (minimum) in any one of the following disciplines: Occupational Therapy.
    • Master's degree or OTD preferred.
    • RESNA Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) credential preferred.
    • Prior experience in assistive technology service delivery preferred.
    • Prior experience communicating and working directly with clients, families, professionals in the field, and third-party payers preferred.
    • Comprehensive knowledge base regarding disability (congenital and acquired) and corresponding impact on function preferred.
    • Valid Illinois driver's license preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
    • Prior experience compiling data and producing written summaries and presentations preferred.
    • Excellent communication, research, analytic, and computer skills, including related software and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, etc. preferred.
