The Sterile Processing Instrument Coordinator is responsible for supporting and coordinating the daily activities of the Sterile Processing Technicians by ensuring completeness of all surgical instrument sets in inventory and altering practices and processes to ensure industry best practice. This position orders, receives, stores, and distributes all replacement instrumentation throughout the SPD areas and oversees the quality of repaired instrumentation. This position reports monthly on the rate of incomplete trays in inventory and keeps 95% of the inventory complete at all times, based on the trend report produced by CensiTrac. This job maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the OR Specialty Team Managers (STM), Surgical Tech Coordinators and Sterile Processing in order to ensure complete and appropriate instrumentation for surgeries. Educates and serves as the technical resource on proper care of surgical instruments. This job also maintains a strong working knowledge of the instrument tracking system to assist with locating trays, following up on lost instruments, etc.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Certification as a Registered Central Sterilization Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) or Surgical Tech certification CST, or TS-C or CORST) required Certified Health Leader (CHL) and Certified Instrumentation Specialist (CIS) Certification preferred
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current CRCST, CSPDT, CST, TS-C or CORST certification required
Experience REQUIRED: Three (3) or more years previous work experience as a Sterile Processing Technician or two (2) or more years work experience as a Surgical Technologist Previous experience using a personnel computer and software applications
Experience PREFERRED: One (1) year of previous lead or supervisory work experience
Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent
Education/training PREFERRED: Completion of International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) certification preparation course or Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program
Independent action(s) required: Identifies and assists in working through items missing from trays. Educates Sterile Processing Technicians regarding new instrumentation, changes to existing instrumentation, and instrumentation issues. Meets with Specialty Team Mangers, Surgical Tech Coordinators and Care Partner (CP) to discuss quality feedback regarding instruments and ideas for efficiency and improvements. Serves as the specialty resource for instrumentation. Troubleshoots operational issues regarding instruments that are impeding work flow. Checks inventory levels in SPD and assures maintenance of par levels for all instruments and supplies. Follows Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and The Joint Commission (TJC) guidelines.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): In the absence of the supervisor, takes a lead role to direct staff, makes staff assignments in order to carry out the demands of the department. Assists with directing SPD Technicians on prioritizing trays in Decontamination and Prep and Pack.
