General Description / Primary Objectives:

Manage a fast-paced transportation department with a focus on minimizing costs while keeping elevated levels of effectiveness and customer satisfaction. The Transportation Manager handles customer deliveries and must work closely with the Production department to properly prioritize scheduling deliveries. Oversee daily operations and activities of the fleet and staff and use transportation metrics and best practices to improve efficiency and overall departmental effectiveness.

Specific Responsibilities of the job

(Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following):




  • Carries out DOT, environmental, and GMP policies and procedures to ensure that all drivers still comply.





  • Manages activities of the Transportation Department and coordinates with Private Label to ensure that all products are handled and shipped out on schedule.





  • Ensures Proper Training of all drivers according to DOT Regulations and environmental laws.





  • Reviews, processes, and files all paperwork from the previous day's routes (i.e., payroll sheets, driver's logs, delivery tickets, vehicle inspection reports, driver trip reports, DOT physicals, etc.).





  • Prepares and evaluates operating budget.





  • Confirms all routes have left at their scheduled dispatch time.





  • Recruits and, with the Human Resources Department, hire qualified CDL Class A truck drivers.





  • Fosters and keeps open communication with the general plant manager and other department heads.





  • Possesses knowledge of investigation audits and procedures.





  • Follows up on all customer-related issues (i.e., prompt deliveries, late deliveries, specials, short deliveries, etc.).





  • Leadership skills, project administration, strategizing planning, excellent record-keeping skills, and inventory control.





  • Ability to ease departmental meetings and good public speaking skills.





  • Performs all other duties as required by the plant manager, transportation director, and owners.





  • Safety: Keeps a safe working environment for all employees/contractors; promotes safety in all areas of operations; schedules and conducts safety meetings every month.





  • Sanitation: keeps the work area; always follows proper G. M. P.'s.




WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:




  • Two to three years of experience as a CDL Class "A" truck driver.





  • CDL Class "A" license is needed.





  • Two or more years of experience as a Transportation Manager/Supervisor





  • Demonstrated knowledge of transportation and DOT requirements.





  • Bachelor's degree in management or a related field is preferred, a high school diploma or equivalent or a combination of experience and technical training.





  • Excellent bookkeeping and inventory skills.





  • Strong written skills and communication skills.





  • Strong computer knowledge.





  • Must be able to stand 10 - 12 hours per day.





  • Operation is a seven-day workweek responsibility, and some weekends or days off may be necessary to complete tasks.





Work environment:

While performing this job, the employee may need to help unload, load, or move inventory with specific material handling equipment or by hand to keep the work process flowing. Product containers can weigh up to 600 lbs. The facility is a warehouse environment in which climate control outside of office areas can fluctuate.
