About the Department
The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources ( LAR) is to provide NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources at the least practical cost. The term "animal resources" includes not only animal housing facilities but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. LAR is responsible for assisting faculty in conducting animal experimentation in keeping with these standards and is committed to assuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and reasonable use.
North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine ( CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems.
Essential Job Duties
This position will act as a veterinary assistant and provide skilled nursing care for laboratory animals undergoing anesthesia and surgery with minimal supervision. This technician should be well-versed in rodent colony management, procedures, and training for PIs.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintain transgenic mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, mouse ordering, interacting with vet techs, database management).
  • Perform various experimental procedures, including phenotyping the mice, tissue harvesting and preparation, anesthesia administration, and tissue sectioning.
  • Keep track of drug inventories for sedatives and anesthetics and maintain detailed logs of usage and disposal of controlled substances. Assist with data analysis.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook. Engage in laboratory research by performing complex lab and research-related service tasks.
  • Support the development, design, and conduct of increasingly complex research projects.
  • Perform complex tasks independently and adapt methods and procedures to meet research needs.
  • Complete specialized treatments in an accurate and timely fashion.
  • Work proactively to keep patients clean and comfortable.
  • Maintain a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed, and infection is not spread.
  • Handle all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately.
  • Follow all radiation safety, OSHA, IACUC, USDA, AAALAC, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate animal records
  • Perform basic animal husbandry on a wide variety of species
  • Administer routine medications
  • Maintain sanitation and safety procedures in accordance with regulations

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge in rodent colony management, procedures, and training for PIs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clientele, faculty, and supervisor.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Prior professional experience in mouse colony management.
  • Experience with inventory control and maintenance.
  • Ability to work with many different species of research and lab animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in animal husbandry
  • Wide variety of species care (especially livestock/poultry/aquatics)

  • AALAS certifications
