Description & Requirements

The Broad Institute's Office of Government Relations (OGR) is seeking a Senior Government Relations Specialist to help build and expand our local, state, and federal advocacy efforts. This role is ideal for a government relations professional who is eager to contribute strategically to the advancement of biomedical research and shape institutional policy priorities.

This position is suited for someone with 3-5 years of direct experience in government relations and a background in congressional advocacy, strategic communications, and policy operations. The ideal candidate must have experience in building internal systems, crafting outreach strategies, managing appropriations efforts, and leading both stakeholder engagement and internal coordination.

This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of two days onsite per week.

The Senior GRS will report to the Associate Director of Science Policy and Advocacy and will serve as one of the liaisons from OGR between the Broad and external stakeholders in government and the policy community. This position requires an individual who brings both policy insights and operational excellence to government affairs work and who is passionate about the role of science in informing public policy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Government outreach and institutional alignment

  • Support Broad's engagement strategy with legislative offices (local, state, federal) and policy coalitions, particularly around research funding and biomedicine/health topics
  • Lead the development of educational briefings, internal reporting tools, and cross-functional workflows that enhance strategic coordination and decision-making across the groups/teams OGR works with.
  • Serve as a policy advisor to the AD and internal teams on how to effectively engage on relevant policy topics and respond to evolving legislative trends.

Policy research, writing, and advocacy support

  • Prepare policy memos, pre-meeting briefings, and dossiers for Broad leadership and advocacy stakeholders.
  • Conduct policy research and analyze proposed legislative developments relevant to federal, state, and local biomedical research funding, data policy, and innovation.
  • Attend briefings, hearings, and stakeholder meetings (primarily virtual) and write summaries of legislative and policy developments. Occasional day-travel to Washington, DC (up to three times a year) may be expected.
  • Draft and disseminate post-meeting summaries and key takeaways to internal teams and external partners.
  • Support the development of public policy positions, advocacy strategies, and communications materials in collaboration with the Communications Office.

Government relations operations & stakeholder management

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Office of Government Relations, including meeting coordination, scheduling, and logistics.
  • Assist in planning and executing government relations events, including high-profile government visits, policymaker engagements, and Broad-hosted policy briefings.
  • Track outreach efforts and stakeholder engagement using CRM and database tools to document Broad's interactions with policymakers.
  • Coordinate government relations reporting, ensuring timely updates on policy activities, legislative developments, and breaking news coverage of priority health policy issues.
  • Assist AD in liaising between Broad and their external consultants.
  • Develop monthly reports for relevant internal and external stakeholders -- tracking and reporting activities on behalf of the Office of Government Relations.

Administrative & event coordination support

  • Handle scheduling and administrative duties for the Associate Director, including arranging meetings, maintaining correspondence, booking travel, and supporting daily workflows.
  • Manage vendor relationships, contract renewals, and budget tracking related to government relations activities.
  • Provide event support, including logistics, agenda preparation, briefing materials, and on-site coordination for meetings with policymakers and external partners.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-5 years of experience in state or federal government relations, advocacy, or legislative affairs; prior experience in biomedical research, education policy, health policy, or data policy is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing congressional engagement strategies and building cross-functional GR-based internal systems.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to tailor complex topics for diverse policy audiences.
  • Strong policy research, analysis, and synthesis abilities, particularly around legislative and regulatory issues relevant to science, health, and technology.
  • High level of organizational agility and ability to balance multiple deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort working both independently and collaboratively with diverse teams across seniority levels.
  • Familiarity with congressional structures, executive agency priorities, and CRM tools is strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a STEM discipline, public policy, political science, or a related field preferred.
