Lead Field Service Technician - Transformers

The Lead Field Service Technician is a skilled, hands-on professional responsible for leading field service operations for power Transformer and related equipment in a shop environment as well as on-site maintenance and testing of power distribution equipment in industrial facilities and power plants. This role combines advanced technical expertise with leadership to ensure high-quality service delivery, strict safety compliance, and customer satisfaction. The Lead Technician mentors team members, troubleshoots complex issues, and coordinates with management to execute projects efficiently across multiple job sites. This is a remote position tied to our Temple, TX facility and entails 80% travel for business needs - primarily focused on the Central Region territory(Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma)
Responsibilities & Expectations
  • Perform and guide transformer repairs, upgrades, and overhaul of Low, Medium and High Voltage Transformers (480V thru 765kV) ensuring compliance with industry standards (e.g., IEEE, ANSI, NETA).
  • Conduct advanced electrical testing on transformers and related equipment in industrial, power distribution facilities.

    • Conduct transformer turns ratio (TTR) tests to verify voltage/turns ratio.



    • Perform Doble (power factor) tests to assess insulation condition, targeting <0.5% for optimal results.



    • Execute Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (SFRA) to diagnose winding and core integrity.



    • Oversee installation, testing, and repair of GSU transformers in substations, monitoring oil levels and Buchholz gas alarms.



    • Manage transformer bushings to prevent ground faults and arcing.



    • Maintain busbars for efficient high-current distribution.



    • Operate load tap changers (LTC/OLTC) to regulate voltage under load.



    • Ensure conservator tanks maintain stable oil levels, preventing contamination.



    • Prepare and submit accurate test reports and technical documentation.



    • Troubleshoot complex issues, collaborating with engineering teams.

Team Guidance
  • Mentor and train field service technicians, fostering skill development in technical and safety practices.
  • Assign tasks, monitor work quality, and provide real-time feedback to ensure adherence to project specifications.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings to reinforce company policies and industry standards.
Field Operations
  • Oversee job site activities, ensuring work aligns with project scope, timeline, and budget.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Field Service Foreman to secure crews, equipment, and materials for seamless operations.
  • Inspect ongoing and completed work to verify quality, safety, and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Manage and document change orders, communicating with management for scope adjustments.
Safety and Compliance
  • Enforce OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and industry best practices.
  • Perform regular safety audits, address hazards, and ensure proper PPE usage.
  • Report incidents, including accidents or near misses, promptly to management.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
Customer Engagement
  • Act as the primary on-site contact for customers, addressing concerns and ensuring satisfaction.
  • Resolve escalated issues in the field, coordinating with management to meet client expectations.
  • Provide professional updates on project status and scope changes.
Administrative Tasks
  • Submit daily reports, time sheets, expense reports, and technical documentation.
  • Track job progress for accurate billing and contract compliance.
  • Provide feedback to management on team performance and operational enhancements.
Emergency Support
  • Respond to after-hours emergency service calls, coordinating rapid resolution of critical issues.
  • Mobilize resources with management for urgent repairs or maintenance.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Support onboarding and training of new technicians.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives for field operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Field Service Manager.

Education


  • High school diploma or GED required; associate's degree in electrical technology or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent of 7+ years of hands-on experience in transformer services may substitute for formal education.


Experience


  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a lead technician or supervisor in field service operations, preferably in the electrical or transformer industry.
  • Extensive hands-on experience (5+ years) in transformer installation, testing, maintenance, and repair.
  • Proven ability to lead crews and manage job sites effectively.
