PRINCIPAL CLERK
OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for a Principal Clerk for the Office of the City Clerk. Under the general direction of the City Clerk, the position will perform clerical duties and assist customers via walk-in, telephone, and electronically regarding vital records. The employee will respond to citizen inquiries and complaints, including the explanation of departmental policies and regulations to other city employees and the public; and will collect, compile, and enter complex statistical data. Employee will perform tasks related to the election season when necessary.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:



  • Perform considerable customer service and clerical skills in an office setting
  • Possess ability to collect, compile, and enter complex statistical data from a variety of source material
  • Respond to citizen complaints, including the explanation of departmental policies and regulations to other city employees and the general public, and refers complaints to the proper authority
  • Establish complex cross reference files and file categories and designates obsolete material to be removed from files
  • Research and access historical records/archives
  • Guide and lead in the sorting of documents for filing
  • Answer telephone and assists the work of other clerks at the counter
  • Operate standard office machines and appliances incidental to clerical assignments
  • Perform related work as required


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:



  • Knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment, demonstrated proficiency with personal computers
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to address questions and customer concerns via telephone, email, and in-person, in a consistently professional and courteous manner
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to make arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy
  • Ability to type from clear copy at high rate of speed
  • Ability to maintain complex clerical records and to prepare reports
  • Ability to accurately collect, compile, and enter statistical data
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, regulations, and established policies
  • Ability to lift and handle materials and equipment up to forty (40) pounds
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse populations
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends during election seasons
  • Regular on-site attendance is required


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Customer service and/or clerical experience in an office setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Associate's Degree in Business Administration, Political Science, History, Public Administration, or related discipline
  • Two (2) years of office or clerical experience
  • Two (2) years of customer service experience
  • One (1) year of municipal experience


SALARY RANGE: $21.87 - $26.48 hourly, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.
