Manager - Commercial Loan Underwriting

Position Summary:

The Commercial Underwriting Manager will lead, manage, and oversee the loan underwriting process. This includes commercial conventional loans, commercial real estate loans, participation loans, and government-guaranteed loans, ensuring compliance with credit union policies, industry standards, and regulations.This role involves managing a team of underwriters, analyzing commercial loan applications, assessing risk, maintaining compliance, and making loan approval decisions. This position must communicate recommendations (approval, suspense, denial) to appropriate individuals within the credit union and uphold fair lending practices. Will provide guidance and resources for the underwriters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the underwriting of commercial loan applications, ensuring the production of high-quality, detailed credit approval documents with thorough analysis and identification of credit risks.
  • Manages a team of Underwriters, delegating tasks and overseeing workflow, including covenant compliance testing, financial statement spreading, and other credit-related functions.
  • Collaborate with business development teams, loan officers, and key stakeholders to structure loan solutions that meet member needs while mitigating credit risk.
  • Leads and optimizes underwriting workflows, streamline processes, and implement procedures to enhance operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and service delivery.
  • Recommends loan approvals, structures, and risk ratings based on sound credit analysis and alignment with internal policies.
  • Reviews and approves loan write-ups, ensuring compliance with internal policies, regulations, and sound underwriting standards.
  • Fosters a collaborative and high-performing work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Provides training and guidance to underwriters and staff on underwriting standards, credit risk assessment, and updates to regulatory requirements.
  • Monitors and stays current on regulatory guidance from the NCUA, TCUD, and Small Business Administration (SBA).

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business, or related field.
  • Formal credit training is highly preferred

Licensure:

  • Eight to Ten years of experience in commercial loan underwriting, 3 years of management experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Commercial Lending Expertise: Experience in underwriting and managing commercial loans, including Commercial & Industrial (C&I) and Real Estate loans.
  • Credit Analysis Skills: Proficiency in analyzing financial statements, credit reports, and collateral to assess risk and creditworthiness.
  • Leadership Experience: Proven ability to lead and mentor a team of underwriters, fostering collaboration and ensuring high-quality work.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with credit union policies, regulatory requirements, and compliance standards related to commercial lending.
  • Portfolio Management: Experience in monitoring and managing commercial loan portfolios, identifying risks, and implementing strategies for improvement.
  • Communication Skills: Strong ability to collaborate with stakeholders, including loan officers, legal teams, and borrowers, to structure loans and resolve issues.
  • Process Improvement: Experience in streamlining underwriting processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
