FLEET MECHANIC

The Fleet Mechanic performs skilled technical diagnostic, repair and maintenance work on trucks, and other light and heavy power-driven equipment. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude and a commitment to safety and quality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

These duties are those typically performed in this position. Employee may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties.



  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems on diesel/gas engines and heavy equipment
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot engine and system malfunctions; operates and maintains a complete set of hand, power, and shop tools
  • Determine the extent of necessary repairs, scheduling of repairs, and associated cost and material estimates
  • Performs routine maintenance, such as oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and lubrication on cars, trucks and other equipment
  • Maintains work, material and equipment maintenance logs and records
  • Utilize equipment tracking and maintenance software (Tenna) to schedule preventive maintenance and update maintenance requests
  • Responds to emergency service calls for repairing or towing equipment that has broken down away from the shop
  • Recommends contract work as necessary; locates and recommends vendors
  • Requisitions or orders replacement parts and supplies
  • Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and other related materials in performing work assignments and to stay abreast of the current technology
  • Follow safety protocols, including handling of hazardous materials, and ensure equipment is operating safely and efficiently
  • Keep work area clean, organized, and compliant with company policies
  • Work within and promote corporate vision, mission, and values of the organization
  • Performs other duties as assigned



REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND EDUCATION

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.



  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in diesel technology or related field preferred
  • 5+ years of experience as a diesel or heavy equipment mechanic
  • Valid commercial driver's license (Class A) preferred
  • Successful completion of an air brake-related training program or demonstrable experience preferred
  • Experience working on cranes and boom/scissor manlifts preferred
  • Thorough understanding of the DOT inspection criteria outlined in 49 CFR 396 and Appendix A to Part 396 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR)
  • Experience and working knowledge of the types and use of special tools and technology common to the repair and diagnoses of vehicles, equipment, and their component systems
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans and specifications related to job duties
  • Understand regulations, standards, and guidelines pertaining to the work, including state and federal inspections
  • Demonstrated ability to use logical step-by-step procedures in work to plan and solve problems
  • Knowledge and use of basic office procedures and equipment including computers and supporting software applications such as Microsoft and other comparable programs
  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements for applicable safety policies



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Lifting/carrying objects 75 lbs. or more
  • Lifting from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead
  • Frequent standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, crouching/squatting, crawling up to 8+ hours per day
  • Handling and manipulating objects and materials
  • Coordinating the movements of eyes, hands and fingers
  • Seeing with or without correction
