The expected hiring range for this position is:

$20.00-$37.50.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

About the Role:
Under direct supervision, the Graduate Research Assistant position is composed of college and university students enrolled in a program specializing in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), or Computing and Accelerator Science curriculum that work along-side staff, providing technical assistance on project-based tasks and/or research.
Optical simulations need to be generated now to inform and optimize the placement of baffles or blackening vacuum pipe in the MAGIS-100 laser conditioning and telescope regions to mitigate the impact of scattered light from imperfect optics and residual laser beam clipping. This work is expected to include experimental prototyping at Fermilab.
This activity is aligned with the MAGIS-100 project schedule and are R&D tasks that are needed to be ready for upcoming phases of the MAGIS-100 experiment and also to greatly reduce project risk.

Employee Status:

  • Can be fixed term or on-call based on the term of the assistantship
  • Fixed term: Assistantship is 6months, limited to 20-40 hours/week.
  • On-Call: Assistantship is a maximum of 40 hours/week for the summer months, and less than 20 hours/ week for fall/spring not to exceed 1000 hours in one year.

Note: Only fixed term employees with a minimum of 20 hours worked per week are eligible forvacation and benefits.

What your day-to-day as a Graduate Research Assistant at Fermilab will look like:

  • You will work along-side staff specializing in scientific, technology, engineering, math, or computing and accelerator science to provide technical assistance on project-based tasks and/or research.
  • You will Investigate, define, and propose solutions to assigned technical and scientific problems.
  • Activities include but are not limited to assistance with data analysis, assembly prototypes, calibration code and catalogs, test set-up and monitoring, general contribution to operation of facilities, and application of modeling and simulation tools.
  • You will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • You will abide by and be responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited university or college as an undergraduate student and hold some research or technical experience.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Possesses and applies the skills required to perform the technical tasks (will vary by assignment).
  • Experience with producing optical simulations to inform and optimize the placement of baffles or blackening vacuum pipe in the context of MAGIS-100 to mitigate the impact of scattered light from imperfect optics and residual laser beam clipping. Experimental prototyping of baffles is also expected.

Work Arrangement:
Please note that the described work arrangement is subject to change based on business needs and is not guaranteed to be final.
