Position Summary
This position will serve as the lab manager/research technician for the Downs research lab. This lab performs NIH funded basic biomedical research and trains graduate and undergraduate students in the process. The position provides support, both managerial and scientific to the lab personnel and the PI. In addition, this position will contribute to the scientific productivity of the laboratory by performing independent directed research that contributes to the goals of the PI and includes in vivo genetic, and in vitro biochemical and molecular biological techniques.

  • Perform basic microbiological techniques, have knowledge and basic understanding of biological, chemical and radiation safety practices.
  • Have knowledge and experience with the handling and genetic/biochemical/molecular biological manipulation of enteric bacteria.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist in laboratory research that will be used to publish papers in Microbiology Scientific journals.
  • Duties will include performing biochemical, genetic and molecular biological experiments, interpreting data, summarizing data and assisting with developing reports.
  • Includes a significant degree of independence, but will provide the Principal Investigator with weekly updates.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for monitoring the research supplies and equipment.

    • Including: ordering supplies, following up on service and technical problems, interacting with sales professionals, researching equipment features and prices prior to purchasing.
    • The personnel in the lab will work directly with this position to make sure orders are placed correctly.



  • Enforcing cleanliness, best practices with respect to chemical, and biological safety with the laboratory personnel.
  • Regularly communicate with the PI about these issues, and indicate any issues that may arise which need the PI's attention.

  • Direct supervisor for 1-2 student hourly employees.
  • Scheduling, teaching, and identifying substitutes when one or more students are unable to come in for a period of time.
  • Serve as supervisor for approving hours in OneUSG Connect for the student employees.
