Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the preventative maintenance, repair, and improvement of grounds, using a variety of machines, tools, and equipment. Work may involve overseeing a small crew of workers in the maintenance and improvement of grounds.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

- Assembles tools, equipment, and materials and performs specific work tasks on city-owned grounds.
- Oversees a small crew of workers in the maintenance and improvement of City grounds.
- Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from supervisor.
- Mows and maintains parks, streetscapes, beautification areas, public building grounds, and athletic fields. Cleans and maintains tennis courts, parking lots, playgrounds, sidewalks, and boardwalks. Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, topdressing, soil conditioning, watering, pest, and weed control of parks and open spaces.
- Maintains baseball, softball, and multipurpose fields to game-ready standards.
- Prepares athletic fields by dragging infields, chalking lines, and painting lines. Paints lines with aerosol sprayer and robotic field painter.
- Operates a robotic line painter to marks fields, and maintains the painter before and after painting.
- Monitors turf health including mowing, aerating, topdressing, fertilizing, and overseeding.
- Performs moisture management on infield clay and other areas.
- Sprays shrub beds, fence lines, and lawns using a variety of sprayers and chemicals in accordance with the Department of Pesticide Regulation. Maintains application records.
- Installs and maintains benches, picnic tables, signs, and other amenities in parks and beautification areas. Paints structures, and repairs woodwork with carpenter's tools. Repairs or replaces building brick, stone, and concrete. Repairs and maintains external fencing.
- Maintains and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems. Repairs and replaces worn or damaged parts, such as hoses, and belts, in machines and equipment, such as riding mowers, edgers, and power sprayers.
- Picks up and disposes of litter, paper, and rubbish from parks, playgrounds, public building grounds, streetscapes, highway right of ways, sidewalks, and beautification areas.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of grounds maintenance functions.
- Opens and closes, locks, and unlocks facilities as needed.
- Prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
- Keeps records of work completed.
- Operates a variety of equipment and machinery including pickup truck, lawn and landscaping equipment, tractors, mowers, airifer, trencher, pulverizer, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems, janitorial equipment, pressure sprayer, pressure washer, rototillers, hand sprayer, power sweeper, power blower, etc.
- Uses a variety of tools and supplies including edgers; weed trimmers; hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, and cement finishing work; dusting equipment; power saws; sled hammer; drills; rakes; shovels; picks; pitchforks; pruning equipment; hammer; hand mower; pruning shears; spade; spreader; hose; scrapers; squeegees; measuring containers.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent with two (2) years of experience in building and grounds maintenance and repair work; or any equivalent of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. |
Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license. A pesticide or Herbicide applicator's license is desirable. |
