Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,320 - $87,900.

Job Closing Date

About the Job

The Financial Services Analyst provides financial management support to faculty and staff of the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts with 160+ faculty. Performs highly complex budget/resource analysis, including retrieval of data from the campus's new Oracle financial systems, organization and validation of data, and the preparation of comprehensive reports for faculty or management, both orally and in writing. Maintains fiscal integrity for all funds and accounts. Ensures all funds are in an auditable/reportable condition. The Analyst is responsible for ensuring financial ledger reconciliation, timely financial reporting, and budget report development and analysis. Must be able to work under the pressure of constantly changing priorities, unanticipated urgent demands, and multiple tasks. Assists school management with special projects as assigned, including presentations and policy/procedure/guideline development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees budgetary management processes, including monitoring expenditures, forecasting financial needs, and ensuring accurate year-end closing by reconciling accounts, preparing financial reports, and complying with institutional and regulatory requirements. Responsible for providing analyses for complex budgetary, financial, and resource projects. Generates and analyzes faculty reports monthly and identifies discrepancies in reporting. Works with appropriate departments in the Central Office to resolve discrepancies. Consults with faculty/PI regularly to discuss their accounts/funds and planned usage, projects, and allocations. Independently prepares complex spreadsheets (using advanced formulas, functions, and techniques) to design and develop analytical summaries and maintain spreadsheets for tracking purposes. Develops financial models. Makes recommendations on maintaining and strengthening internal controls to protect University resources. Interprets related policies and advises faculty accordingly.
  • Prepares various complex analyses and reports in support of the initiatives of the Dean. Such duties could include, but are not limited to: the preparation of year-end carry forward reports, periodic fund balance reports, periodic variance analyses, Funding Commitment Reports, and Temporary Academic Staffing.
  • Responsible for managing, processing, and providing reports and analysis for Graduate group operational and USAP accounts, Department and Graduate Chair compensation, Gifts and Endowments, Post Docs, Senate Awards, and Provost Commitments.
  • May guide less experienced team members and staff on financial processing functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchasing, recharge billing, travel/entertainment, and gift accounting.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, Economics, or another related area, and/or equivalent experience/training. (Required)
  • Three years of directly related, progressively responsible experience working in finance, budgeting, accounting, payroll, and financial projections, or seven years of combined education, training, and experience as indicated. Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Business Management, or Economics, or a related area may substitute for one year of experience. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Has thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices and systems.
  • Has ability to independently gather, organize, and perform financial analysis assignments.
  • Requires ability to present information in a clear and concise manner both in writing and verbally.
  • Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office and common desktop/web applications.
  • University of California financials experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial processes, policies and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial data management and reporting systems.
  • Strong proficiency in the use of spreadsheet and database software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, analytical skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, attention to detail, ability to multi-task in a high volume environment, organizational skills, effective verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and decision making; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of a team.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Leadership skills to provide guidance, coaching and mentoring to professional and support staff.
