Role Overview:

The Systems Engineer (Linux/Virtualization) will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the company's growing Linux server infrastructure, virtualization environment, and related technology areas across both on-premises and cloud environments. This role ensures efficient system performance, scalability, and security, supporting data center operations and contributing to the seamless integration of on-premises and cloud resources. Working closely with Network Operations and cross-department stakeholders, the Systems Engineer will implement architectural improvements, troubleshoot issues, and provide critical support to internal teams, enhancing the overall reliability and performance of the company's infrastructure.

How You'll Help Our Team Succeed:

  • Administers the VMware environment, including building virtual machines, managing resources, monitoring system health, and overseeing storage utilization.
  • Oversees VMware infrastructures, including vSphere, vCenter, VSAN, virtual machines, and virtual networking, ensuring optimal performance and resiliency.
  • Opens and escalates vendor support tickets as needed, troubleshooting issues in collaboration with external support teams.
  • Troubleshoots hardware, software, and network issues, escalating through appropriate support channels when required.
  • Applies operating system patches, security updates, and vulnerability mitigations to maintain system integrity.
  • Safeguards the confidentiality, security, and integrity of Cornerstone's network and computing systems.
  • Participates in an on-call rotation, responding to network outages and critical issues on a 24x7 basis.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies relevant to Linux, virtualization, and network systems.
  • Troubleshoots network connectivity issues, including DNS, WINS, TCP/IP, FTP, remote access, and wireless connections.
  • Assists in establishing operational standards and document these standards to ensure consistency and quality.
  • Maintains adherence to network security protocols and participates in team on-call rotation for network support.

What You'll Need to Be Successful:

  • 8+ years of relevant technical experience, including experience in building and administering Linux and Unix systems within an enterprise environment.
  • Extensive experience in building, configuring, and managing Linux servers, both on-premises and in cloud environments.
  • In-depth expertise in VMware administration, including vSphere, vCenter, VSAN, and virtual networking management.
  • Proficiency in networking across on-premises and cloud platforms, including TCP/IP, Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), and Virtual Networks (Vnets).
  • Advanced knowledge of security best practices and hardening techniques for Linux, cloud, and VMware environments.
  • Proven troubleshooting skills for diagnosing and resolving complex Linux server and VMware environment issues.
  • Experience with automation and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python) and configuration management tools to improve operational efficiency.
  • Familiarity with disaster recovery planning and high-availability configurations to support business continuity.
  • Proficiency in system monitoring and performance optimization.
  • Strong documentation skills and experience following ITIL or similar frameworks to ensure consistent, standardized documentation and troubleshooting processes.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with vendors and cross-functional teams to support the organization's network and system infrastructure.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, skills and experience
  • Relevant professional certification including a preference for VMware Certified Professional (VCP) and a Linux certification. Other relevant IT certifications, such as CISSP, CompTIA Network+, or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE), are a plus.

Cornerstone Research is offering a competitive market base salary for this position. The base salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position in all eligible locations. This range may differ based on your geographic location and cost of living considerations. At Cornerstone Research, we believe compensation is more than just a base salary. We offer a competitive total compensation package that includes an annual performance bonus and comprehensive benefits such as flexible options for healthcare, paid time off, and retirement savings. Relocation assistance is not offered for this position.

Chicago: $97,200 - $124,700

Boston: $100,800 - $129,300

Washington, DC: $100,100 - $128,500

Los Angeles: $101,900 - $130,800

New York: $105,000 - $134,700

San Francisco: $110,900 - $142,200

Silicon Valley: $113,100 - $145,000
