Position Title Manager, Science Research Mentoring Program
Department Education (YI) - 052
Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Education department is seeking a full-time Manager, Science Research Mentoring Program ( SRMP). Reporting to the Assistant Director of Science Research and Mentoring Experiences, this position works Monday through Friday and will include two to three shifts per week that last until 7pm.

The Youth Initiatives (YI) group, a division of the Museum's Education division, is dedicated to STEM workforce development and science enrichment for youth ages 10 to 24. In YI, we aspire to be a hub and model for youth science learning and engagement that promotes full participation in science by all young people.

SRMP is an application-based, out-of-school program that aims to increase access to science fields and careers for NYC high school students from populations historically and currently excluded from STEM fields by providing authentic research experiences and meaningful mentorship. SRMP has also served as a model for a city-wide scale-up leading to the NYC Science Research Mentoring Consortium, a network of 24 institutions collectively providing 500 research-based mentorships annually ( https://www.studentresearchnyc.org). SRMP is built on a foundation of core beliefs, including: 1) All young people can thrive in science. 2) Conducting high quality scientific research while in high school improves scholars' person growth and increases opportunities for success long-term. 3) Science is more effective and meaningful as a community. 4) Working with young scholars adds value to scientists' careers.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Recruit, admit, orient, support and advise youth throughout the year and as alumni. This includes recruiting youth, leading activities to build connections with youth and families; managing summer institute curriculum and a 1-week overnight field trip; creating and running workshops on science communication, college readiness and understanding barriers to engaging in STEM; and developing alumni activities.
  • Serve as a scientist-mentor for one high school team on a science research project in a field represented in the Museum Science Division and engage as a scientific advisor for Youth Initiatives.
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise scientist-mentors and provide ongoing support in their professional development. This includes co-developing and leading 3-5 annual mentor workshops and creating a shared community of practice with mentors through informal check-ins and lab visits.
  • Engage with the Science Research Mentoring Consortium as a participant-leader by attending meetings and events and by leading committee and working groups.
  • Maintain and manage budgets, grants and annual program reporting.

The expected salary range for the Manager, Science Research Mentoring Program is $65,000/annual - $72,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.
