Job Summary

South Mountain Community College is now hiring a OYO General Business residential instructor to start in Fall of 2025.

This One-Year-Only (OYO) faculty will instruct, advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds in general business with an emphasis on statistics and social media; use multiple methods of instruction, assessment results, and appropriate technologies to engage students in learning, enhance teaching, and promote student success; The instructor will teach in both traditional and non-traditional settings, such as short-term courses and accelerated programs, as well as hybrid and/or online courses. The instructor will facilitate activities outside the classroom for students (e.g. internships, clubs, experiences for students in the community, etc.), build relationships with businesses and community organizations and provide leadership for the general business program including statistics and social media. Demonstrate a commitment to service excellence, innovation, assessment, student success, and integrity in the performance of job duties. May teach evening as well as day classes.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and instructs a diverse population of students in a classroom and/or lab setting; evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records;
  • Prepares and grades exams; uses audiovisual and multimedia materials and multiple instructional delivery systems; develops and enhances knowledge of subject matter taught and individual training skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field and to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, and/or workshops; and advises students regarding AAS degrees and CCLs.
  • Assists and responds to problems/requests from students; is available during in-person office hours and virtual office hours; uses electronic communication to stay in touch with students; serves on collaborative work teams with faculty, staff, administration and community stakeholders; collaborates with Faculty to complete division initiatives; and other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in college and district activities, including department/division meetings, committees, workshops, and projects; maintains office hours to assist and advise students; completes FERPA, 45th Day roster verification and assigns grades on time; engages in the academic life of the college by participating in District wide and campus committees; and other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

For occupational disciplines, a combination of education and/or experience is required to qualify. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:
  • Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR
  • Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor's degree or higher OR
  • A Master's degree or higher in the teaching field OR
  • A Master's degree or higher in any field with 18 graduate credits in the teaching field OR
  • A Master's degree or higher in any field with a combination of 24 upper division and/or graduate credits in the teaching field


Desired Qualifications

A. Degree in a quantitative field such as accounting, operations research, supply chain management, data mining, data modeling, econometrics, finance, industrial engineering, etc. with a preference given to a Master's or higher, preferably in a field of business.

B. Recent experience teaching quantitative business courses, with a preference for statistics courses and social media courses at the post-secondary level with community college experience preferred.

C. Recent industry experience in public relations, digital marketing, social media

D. Experience with teaching methods that involve experiential, collaborative and /or active learning

E. Experience working with diverse populations, including people representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, genders and disabilities.

F. Recently demonstrated college level teaching utilizing a variety of delivery formats, including face-to-face, online and hybrid, as well as short-term and accelerated courses.

G. Recent computer/technical experience with quantitative business and statistical applications such as Excel, accounting software or statistical technical applications such as SPSS or Maplesoft.
