POSITION SPECIFICS

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a candidate fora Research Technologist - Life Sciences (Senior Supervisor) in the laboratory of Professor Natasha Tirko in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.

The primary purpose of this position is to manage the Instructional Laboratory in Molecular Biology and support activities related to the Master of Biotechnology program and students. This position is a core support for biotechnology programs, facilitating dedicated vital training in molecular biology techniques to beginning graduate students preparing for independent research.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • General lab maintenance: Cleaning and organization of lab space; Disposal and monitoring of waste and hazardous waste according to safety regulations; Cleaning of glassware, refrigerators and freezers; Routine maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment; Insure that safety regulations are properly observed by all occupants in the lab.
  • Instructional support and supervision of training activities: Gain mastery of protocols used in graduate classes, workshops and short courses; Preparation of reagents, buffers, media, cell cultures, and biological materials required for courses; Provide supplementary support to undergraduate biotechnology courses as time allows; Participate in the supervision of students and course participants; Participate in laboratory instruction in courses by demonstrating laboratory procedures, proper equipment operation, and giving instructions on safety regulations in the lab.
  • Development and optimization of lab procedures: Conduct experiments designed to optimize current protocols and reduce costs as able; Develop and test new protocols and techniques to facilitate course modernization.
  • Organization of activity schedules and logistics: Support programing (orientation, student networking events, etc.) for the Master of Biotechnology program; Support coordination of needed materials and food for events.
  • Maintaining inventory, equipment, materials and supplies.

Applications will be considered from candidates with education and training in molecular biology or related disciplines. Preference will be given to those with experience managing lab facilities, as well as experience in educating students or teams and scientific outreach programs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $42,100.00 - $61,000.00.
