SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Lead Systems Engineer (DevOps Engineer) oversees complex projects providing subject matter expertise, and technical direction, and plays a key role in providing system administration and technical expertise focusing on pipelines-as-code, CI/CD, and IaC. Playing a crucial role in automating and streamlining our processes to enhance efficiency, reliability, and scalability in our software development lifecycle. This person will work with engineering teams directly in helping them deliver their artifacts quicker to production, and more reliably.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  • Owns and leads the systems development approach as an engineering exercise; confirms requirements and specifications are clear, follows a documented development/build methodology, and makes sure a robust unit, system, and integration testing regimen is followed to deliver solutions per designs.
  • Pipelines-as-Code: Develop and maintain robust, scalable, and efficient CI/CD pipelines using code-based tools such as Jenkins Pipeline, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar.
  • Infrastructure Automation: Implement and manage IaC using tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Ansible, ensuring a consistent and reliable infrastructure deployment.
  • Continuous Integration and Deployment: Build and maintain systems that improve the speed and reliability of our CI/CD processes.
  • Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Document processes, systems, and architectures clearly and share knowledge with team members. Has a strong "Documentation-as-Code" approach.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Work collaboratively with software development and IT teams to integrate DevOps methodologies into their workflows.
  • Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor, analyze, and optimize infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines for performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Security and Compliance: Ensure that the infrastructure and pipelines adhere to security best practices and compliance standards. Familiar with SAST, DAST, secret scanning, open source scanning, creating Software Bill of Materials (SBOM).
  • Technical Expertise and Innovation: Stay abreast of the latest trends and technologies in DevOps, pipelines-as-code, and IaC, and advocate for the adoption of relevant new technologies and practices.
  • Creates and updates documentation as necessary to ensure architectures, designs, and other descriptions are up to date and describe the as-deployed system.
  • Ensures all work is in harmony with all defined industry and company standards as well as ensures that overall implementation is aligned with Amtrak's technology strategies.
  • Leads, guides, and provides cross-functional project oversight for technical teams/resources.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or Business Management plus 5+ years of experience in a DevOps role, with specific experience in pipelines-as-code, CI/CD, and IaC.
  • Proficiency in tools like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Ansible.
  • Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS preferred, Azure, GCP).
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Go or Bash).
  • Ability to focus on business goals while ensuring development is completed on time.
  • Proven ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language.
  • Ability to identify, propose, and oversee the execution of business and IT solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business and IT needs and requirements.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Travel up to 25%
  • Work will be performed Onsite in Washington, D.C., Wilmington Delaware, Philadelphia, PA or Chicago, Illinois.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems or Business Management with 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in computer science, Information Systems or Business Management.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, Terraform Associate).
  • Experience in an Agile development environment, bonus points for SAFe experience
  • Hands-on Experience in creating modular infrastructure-as-code with re-usable components
  • Experience in creating developer portals, allowing for dev teams to get started quicker (such as Backstage)
  • Has created security tollgates for pipelines in the past.
  • Passionate about 'measure what matters".
  • Has experience with reporting DORA metrics, security metrics, build health, and others.


COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:



  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.


The salary/hourly range is$94,300-$122,256, Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, internal equity, etc. Depending on an employee's assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employee's base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
