About the Job

Specific technical/bench-work research (60%):
- Assist in design and performing in vivo and ex vivo immune-based studies/experimentations using mice model systems under guidance and direction of principal investigator
- Analyze data collected from experiments. Assist research team members with preparing data in an easily readable format and prepare graphs, charts, tables and reports of data and the scientific findings
- Assist in writing routine summary reports on results of work and confers with supervisors on interpretation of results and avenues of investigation
- Manage animal colony and genotyping, which includes screening, weaning, tagging and genotyping
- Perform basic molecular analyses including PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction, design and execution of molecular cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, primer design.
- Tissue culture work, processing of tissues and blood samples, virus and bacterial quantification and propagation and RNAi mediated gene silencing approaches for experiments
- Usage of major research instrumentation for readout indices to determine functional outcomes
- Supports scientists in the laboratory and conduct investigations or experiments in an assigned area to aid in the solution of a research problem (standard immunology techniques, western blot, PCR/qPCR, tissue culture work, learning and applying new techniques as needed etc.)
- Independent research at the discretion of the principal investigator.

General laboratory management duties (30%):
- Perform routine genotyping for maintenance and management of animal colonies
- Make standard laboratory reagents (PBS and other buffers, LB media, Agar Plates, DMEM etc), keep the laboratory stocked and clean, and maintain all laboratory equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance on major research equipment and organize and setup equipment for use
- Manage day to day laboratory operations (shipping and receiving, ordering supplies, inventory, supervising undergraduate student workers).
- Perform everyday tasks such as laboratory cleanup (using aseptic techniques), replenishing supplies as needed, remove hazardous and chemical waste
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment
- Follow established biological, chemical and physical safety procedures and train new personnel

Other duties as assigned (10%):
- Preparing data for presentation, publication, and grant proposals
- Guiding, training, assisting and advising junior researchers and students
- Requires the ability to work occasional weekend hours

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

- B.S. in any biological, biomedical or biochemistry-related field(s) and 1+ years' research-related experience in immunology studies [OR] a combination of education and experience to equal 5+ years
- Willingness and ability to work with mice in research
- Ability to multitask, organize work flow, and prioritize goals.
- Knowledge of principles, concepts, practices and methods in biomedical research to solve relatively complex research-related problems and work assignments

Preferred Qualifications:

- Prior experience in small animal (i.e. mice) handling, genotyping and tissue culture work
- Knowledge and experience in use of flow cytometry, Luminex/ELISA, microscopy and qPCR
- Experience in mammalian cell culture, virus/bacterial propagation, and molecular cloning
- Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
- Past experience working in collaborative environment

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota is one of six basic science departments in the Medical School.
