DIVISION DESCRIPTION: The Division of Dance offers the B.A., M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees. The mission is to prepare students for the dance professions (artists, educators, researchers, leaders/administrators) in a student-centered teaching/learning environment that values individuality, diversity, and community. Core values guiding the realization of the mission include: 1) a commitment to the empowerment of women through education, 2) the value of a liberal arts education for all persons and 3) a fundamental belief in the primacy of experience and process. The Division of Dance is contemporary dance-centered and serves a diverse population of approximately 85 undergraduate dance majors and 50 graduate students; 46% of our undergraduate majors are dancers of color, primarily Hispanic and African American students. Faculty, staff, dance musicians and graduate teaching assistants work together to create an interdisciplinary and cooperative environment that fosters the development of individual creative voice, encourages risk-taking, and provides diverse artistic and academic opportunities. Interdisciplinary artistic and research enterprises have long been an integral part of the Division of Dance at TWU and are encouraged through School of the Arts and Design and TWU funding initiatives. The members of the Dance faculty maintain strong collaborative working relationships with colleagues in other academic areas, particularly Women's Studies and the School of the Arts. This year marks the Ph.D. program's 67th year! https://twu.edu/dance/ Texas Woman's University strives to provide an educational environment that affirms the rights and dignity of each individual, fosters diversity, and encourages a respect for the differences among persons.
