Position Overview
The IT Engineer Senior works as part of IT Application Development unit within KU IT, providing key foundational support for systems and services.
This position operates within a standards-based, collaborative, team environment and is a web, API, and command-line application developer whose work will interact with databases, web services, end users, and files. Each of these will potentially be inputs and/or outputs to the services being developed. Different skill sets may be emphasized as dictated by current priorities, requiring the incumbent to be adaptable and flexible. The IT Engineer Senior collaborates with other developers and technical staff to provide expertise and support in areas critical to the organization.
Effective communication with peers, other campus service providers/data sources, vendors, and management is essential to ensure timely and well-documented results. This responsibility can include user experience design, dynamic interactivity, integrating applications with external systems, and accessibility. This position will utilize existing purchased and/or open-sourced software and will be asked to assist in developing custom solutions. The incumbent is expected to work within the architectural frameworks established by the team.
The IT Engineer Sr will support custom PHP applications and utilize existing purchased or open-sourced software (such as Drupal, WordPress, etc.) in their assigned service area.

Job Description
40% - Innovate new services and solutions
- Assists in researching and standardizing new technologies and end-user enhancements.
- Supports the implementation of new solutions to improve upon the web presence and any applications in development.
- Collaborates with the team to evaluate and implement ADA best practices for online technologies.
- Works with IT leadership to ensure information security best practices are implemented for online technologies.
- Engages in training to improve skill sets and stay current with industry trends.
30% - Development & Support
- Assists in designing, developing, testing, improving, and maintaining unit websites through the KU CMS utilizing HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other tools as needed for the project.
- Collaborates with team members to recommend user experience enhancements for the unit's websites and applications.
- Works with staff to verify, document, report, and resolve incidents and problems, either internal or vendor. Tracks, tests, and reports resolution.
- Contributes to technical documentation required to maintain websites and applications.
- Participates in IT Service management, including incident and problem resolution.
- Participates in on-call rotation.
15% - Team Collaboration & Support
- Provides technical guidance to junior team members and supports them throughout the SDLC.
- Works under direction to contribute to technical projects and ensures team alignment.
10% - Project Planning
- Assists designated IT and campus unit staff in creating project plans and carrying out prioritized projects related to ongoing support and service delivery, coordinating with other staff as needed.
- Communicates regularly with the unit manager and other developers to provide status updates and knowledge to clients and peers.
- Ensures deliverables meet relevant standards and architecture in a team culture of code walkthroughs.
5% - Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Five years of demonstrated professional experience developing web applications using a programming language such as JavaScript, Java, PHP, Ruby, Python, etc.
- Five years of demonstrated professional experience with web development using HTML and CSS, as evidenced by application materials.
- Two years of demonstrated experience developing and maintaining database-focused applications using MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
- Effective written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience with Linux operating systems and command-line tools as evidenced by application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal & PHP preferred as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience with a web application framework such as Symfony, Laravel, Django, etc. as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience producing technical documentation as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience with middleware technologies including application servers, directory servers (LDAP), and authentication/authorization as evidenced by application materials.
- Familiarity with JSON and/or XML/XSLT as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience with Web Services such as REST, SOAP, etc. as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience developing for ADA/Accessibility and application security as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience using a version control system (Git preferred) as evidenced by application materials.
