Summary:

The Behavioral Health Technician II, under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse, provides advanced level support and assistance in the care and treatment of children and adolescents, age 5-17, admitted to the inpatient behavioral health unit or emergency department.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provides direct care to patients according to Hospital policy and procedure as delegated and as a team, with licensed RNs. Provide clinical interventions assessed by client needs.
  2. Acknowledge the specific nature of the patient's dysfunction and consider the effect with community, caregivers, family members and program staff. Demonstrate knowledge of each patient as an individual within the framework of the family.
  3. Contribute in the development and implementation of individualized patient care plans and assist in the integration of comprehensive treatment plans. Participate as a Treatment Team member in assessing the social and emotional needs of the patient.
  4. Coordinate patient groups and activities. Facilitate or co-facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic activity groups effectively. Plan and participates in educational, social and recreational activities for individuals and groups of patients in accordance with treatment plan goals.
  5. Develop supportive interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups of patients in accordance with treatment plan goals and that will continue the patient's development as an adult.
  6. Maintain a safe therapeutic environment.
  7. Manage crisis situations effectively using positive de-escalating approaches.
  8. Conduct proactive safety rounds throughout the units, monitoring the milieu. Conduct Environmental Safety Rounds each shift and document/report any unsafe conditions as well as any security violations. Monitor visiting hour activity assuring no visiting takes place in patient rooms, no contraband is passed off by visitors to patients, and milieu remains calm.
  9. Assess for changes in patient behavior that may require a 1:1 interaction to provide early intervention.
  10. Assist in physical restraint techniques necessary in an attempt to control violent, combative patients and maintain a safe environment with respect to age-specific competencies and guidelines in conformance with seclusion and restraint policies and positive approaches training. Initiate debriefing sessions and provide feedback to staff after seclusion and restraint situations and any crisis situation.
  11. Supervise and assist patients with personal hygiene tasks including bathing, dressing, eating, caring for clothing, and organizing personal belongings on a daily basis.
  12. Learn and utilize up-to-date technology and practices in delivery of patient care.
  13. Acts as a primary preceptor/charge to new staff, as well as participates in the education of new processes and procedures in a role as subject matter expert.
  14. Other duties as required.

Other information:

Technical Expertise

  1. Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and facilitating groups.
  2. Proficiency in computerized documentation is preferred.
  3. Experience in healthcare is preferred.

Education and Experience

  1. Education: Bachelor's degree required
  2. Certification: BLS certification through the American Heart Association is required.
  3. Years of experience: 2 or more years of experience in inpatient or outpatient behavioral health or related setting required; experience in settings serving youth adolescents preferred.
  4. Years of experience supervising: None
